She got in her car, and drove toward her past. And hopefully, toward her future.

CHAPTER NINE

HEGOTHERTEXT.And without thinking, he jumped on his motorcycle. He knew exactly where she was going. And he’d been thinking. All day. He had the answer now. The one he hadn’t given yesterday.

The one he’d been afraid to give.

But this was too big to hold back.

He’d lived a whole lot of lonely years since he’d lost Penelope Case.

He was determined not to live any more loneliness.

By the time he got to the field, she was already there. Standing out in the middle of it, wearing that same dress.

She had gone straight home and texted him. She hadn’t even changed.

And he started to run toward her.

And she stood. Smiling.

“Penny,” he said, when he reached her, “I came back for you.”

It was true. It was why he was here. He was here for Penelope Case. He had been building a life for himself and Penelope Case, all this time. Because she had saved him all those long years ago, and all he wanted to do was live in heaven with her.

“I love you,” he said.

“I love you too,” she responded, throwing her arms around his neck and kissing him. Deep and long. With all the passion built up inside her.

“Maybe we’ll drive each other nuts,” he said.

“No. Because we are still those people. The same people we’ve become. I like both versions of you. So much. I like everything about you. And on top of that, I’ve always had you in my heart. Always. I didn’t have a dream. Not when you asked me. But now... Now I know. I don’t just want a guy with a polo shirt. I don’t want a life that looks a certain way. I want a life with you in it. I always have.”

“Me too,” he said. “Me too.”

“We have the rest of our lives to find out all the things we’ve been doing for the last seven years. We have the rest of our lives for this.”

The first time Jude James had caught a glimpse of salvation, she had been in pigtails. And she had been the love of his life.

She still was.
