Maverick stared, the corner of his mouth pulled into the slightest smirk.

“Yes.”

Jordan shoved my shoulder. “I saw you two dancing. Make sure he treats you good, but he seems like a decent guy."

I didn’t doubt it. I knew he would, what frightened me was the ungodly feeling of nerves I had for going out with him.

What if Maverick is right? What if King doesn’t make me feel like he did?

Deep down, I knew the answer. He wouldn’t. Maverick made me feel so many emotions—the good, the bad—the crazy turned-on, out-of-control madness that I knew was a disaster waiting to happen.

However, it didn’t stop me from wanting it again.

Maverick snagged a piece of pizza, his gaze lingering over me like a dart piercing me into a bulls-eye. The lingering feeling of his mouth and teeth against mine slowly drowned my sanity.

Chapter Eight

Maverick

Her blush drove me crazy. It trumped over all of the angry reasons I held for hating her and made me feel warm on the inside. No other girl I’d dated—slept with—whatever, made me feel like Josie.

Even with the knowledge that she stood in her room getting ready to go out with another guy. I knew Keith King wouldn’t make her feel like me, even if she didn’t want to admit it, the sparks I felt with her couldn’t be one-sided.

Jordan tossed a pillow at my face, knocking my game controller from my hand. “What are you doing? We lost! Are you paying attention?”

“It’s just a dumb game,” I said, tossing the pillow back at him.

Jordan grumbled when someone knocked on the door. The sun sank low in the sky, which told me it was time for the crawfish broil. Josie spent most of the day locked in her room. It’d been torture waiting for her to come out to pee, just so I could get a glance at her. Jordan stood up to get the door, but I beat him to it.

The irrational part of me wanted King to see me, even if he knew I lived there. I swung the door open.

King lifted a light eyebrow at me. “Is Josie here?”

The child in me wanted to say she changed her mind. Or rub his nose in the way I kissed her the night before—which hadn’t left my mind the entire day. Who knew Josie Lee would taste like candy?

“Yeah,” I said, not moving.

King laughed under his breath, swiping his palm down his face carefully before tilting his head. “You gonna let me inside or do I need to climb through her window?”

“King?” Josie asked from behind me.

I couldn’t move. I eyed him as if Josie was my daughter and I didn’t like the idea of her dating. And I didn’t, but not because of some daddy issue, because ofmy issues.

My fingers clutched around the door handle.

Josie cleared her throat louder, this time, squeezing her arms through the space to maneuver her way between the door and myself. I stopped her midway with my hand on her upper arm.

I wanted to say things that I knew were unfair.Don’t go with him. Stay … let’s talk. Things I’d never said to a girl in my entire life, especially this girl.

“What?” she asked.

I couldn’t answer.

She sighed, turned, and walked out of my grasp. King’s palm landed on her lower back, and the corner of his mouth moved into a smirk that I swore he aimed at me.

“Dude shut the door, it’s hotter than Satan’s balls out there.”

I watched them walk down to the elevator, King whispered something into her ear, and she laughed. That laugh warmed my heart. When the elevator dinged, King’s eyes slid to mine and held for the briefest of moments before he walked into the lift.
