“But keep talking about other men being cute, and smart, and hot.” We stop at a red light, and he turns to me. “And watch me cross the line of insanity.”

Goosebumps ripple down my spine when he smiles brightly. His blue eyes dance all over my face, gauging my reaction.

I have no idea what I look like, what I let out. My cheeks feel hot. I doubt my skin shows that. I’m mixed between an Indian mom and a Portuguese dad, so I’m a fairly light brown, and I don’t blush often.

But damn, my cheeksburn.

And my hands are sweaty, my legs weak.

I exhale heavily, brushing it all off. “You’re not serious.”

“Not serious?” His deep voice wraps around my heart, squeezing tightly. “Why don’t you ask Ethan how serious I am, baby?”

I feel my eyes round. My hand goes to his on my thigh. “What?”

He shakes his head, immediately regretting his words. It’s clear as day that he’s surprised he admitted it. Whateveritwas.

“Let’s make things clear, Jade. Don’t try to make me jealous. Ever. Because I would actually love to see your face when I rip a man’s heart out just so there’s no risk it can beat for you.”

The car slows down. He turns left and comes to a stop. “We’re here.”

He opens his door and gets out of the truck. I’m too shocked to move, but when I don’t follow, he opens my door. “What are you doing? Waiting for someone from NSC to shoot us?”

“What did you mean?” I refuse to get out. “When you said to ask Ethan how serious you are.”

Because Ethan said breaking up with me wasn’t a choice, he warned me about the things Elliot did to make me his. And now, Elliot…

That makes no sense. Elliot didn’t really care about me back then. When Ethan and I were together, he was fucking girl after girl. Hot girls. Kings’ girls. Not at all the same as what I looked like back then.

“Did I bring you here to have a talk about our relationship, or to do you a fucking favor?”

I grind my teeth together, breathing in and out through my nose. It’s right here, the rage. Bubbling in my chest. Squeezing my stomach. Making me so aware of how heavy my heart is.

“You brought me here so I could fix the van you and your boss are forcing me to drive to a bank robbery. What fucking favor?”

He closes his eyes slowly, reopening them even slower. His patience really is being tested today. He licks his lips, taking a deep breath. “Mention that outside the house one more time, and I’ll have to walk you around with more than a collar. What’s your favorite color for a gag?”

His words are the reminder I needed. My hands go to my neck, remembering the collar. “Oh my god, take it off. I can’t go in there with this stupid thing.”

“You wanted to come here, my love. That was your choice, not mine.”

Have I become so comfortable with a piece of leather around my neck that I forgot about it when I asked to come here?

What is wrong with me?

“Elliot, take it off.” My simmering anger makes him chuckle.

“So feisty.” Grabbing my wrist, he pulls me out of the truck.

He drags me along as he strides to the repair shop. We don’t need to go through the reception, since the large garage doors are wide open. Cars are spread out in the whole space. We walk onto the polished concrete flooring, but I can’t hear any repair noise. Anything at all.

“Hello!” Elliot calls out cheerily. “This is a robbery. Anyone in here?”

The very last person I expected to see here shows up through the back door that leads to their offices and apartment.

“Oh.” That’s the only sound Barbie makes.

Xi’s girlfriend is holding a huge cake. It saysCongratulations Racer!andher bright pink apron burns my retina.
