“Jade!” Her enthusiasm at seeing me almost gives me a headache. No one is this sweet.

Her gaze follows mine to the cake. “Racer got a job as a mechanic at Silver Falls Sports Car Club on the South Bank. How amazing is that? I mean, I know you and him must have…differences. But I’m so happy for him.”

I don’t think she really understands Kings and NSC are not just enemies. A violent, bloody war is a little more thandifferences.

“Jade.” I turn to Elliot, who’s pinching the bridge of his nose with his thumb and forefinger. “You just elongated my day, you know that? What a fucking headache you are.”

“I didn’t know,” I fight back.

Barbie seems to realize who’s with me, and her smile drops. She takes the slightest step back. “Elliot.”

“Don’t worry, Alex. I’m not here to hurt you. I promise.”

My gaze snaps to him. “What did you do to her? What could you possibly do to a soul as innocent as hers?”

I don’t even know why I’m suddenly protective of the girl. She texted me a million times in the last week. She created a group chat with Rose White, her, and me, and I guess she’s starting to win me over.

But also, who sends that many pictures of their pet bunnies?

Elliot shrugs. “I was looking for you, my love. What I did to find you doesn’t really count.”

A sweet voice cuts off our interaction. “Racer is just out.” Barbie smiles politely, her words as articulate as ever. “In the nicest way possible, you might want to…not be here when he comes back. He’s with—” She stops herself, her eyes widening as she looks behind us. “Xi, hi baby.” Fuck my life. “Cake is ready,” she concludes awkwardly, lifting the sweet treat to show it to her boyfriend.

“You have got to be kidding me,” Xi’s annoyed voice rises behind us. “What kind of fucking death wish do you two have?”

We don’t get to answer.

“No, no…Logan!” Barbie’s last word is a high-pitched screech. It’s drowned out by the sound of a gun firing.

Reflexes make me lower myself as my hands come to protect the back of my head. A car window explodes, probably where the bullet lands. Barbie drops her cake, and it weirdly lands perfectly. The metal mold doesn’t break, and nothing happens to her perfect cake.

I can’t say the same about us.

Elliot’s pained grunt makes me flip around. He’s still standing, turned around to face the shooter.

Logan is standing between Xi and Racer. Xi sighs heavily, like he can’t be bothered by the drama, but Racer’s wide eyes are stuck on Elliot. I follow his gaze to my friend’s shoulder. Blood slowly spreads through his gray Sum 41t-shirt.

“Fuck, fuck, fuck,” I mutter.

“Oh my God,” Barbie panics. She runs toward us, her hands hovering over Elliot’s shoulder. “Are you alright?”

“Alexandra,” Xi hisses. He grabs her by the upper arm and drags her to him. “Do you need me to remind you this is the exact same man who threatened your life?”

“I know, but—”

“We don’t want trouble,” I manage to say calmly. “I just wanted to talk to Racer.”

“Yeah?” Logan takes a threatening step, his gun still aimed at Elliot. “You don’t need your little boyfriend for that, do you?”

“Not my boyfriend.”

“Really, Jade?” Elliot admonishes. It’s hard to tell if he’s gritting his teeth because of the pain or because of what I said. “Take that shit back.”

Right, it was because of what I said. “For the millionth time, we arenotboyfriend and girlfriend.”

His hand comes to press on the wound on his shoulder. “I will make you eat your words. You just wait.”

“You think you can just show up here.” Logan’s furious tone brings us both back to the present.
