ETHAN

With Me - Sum 41

I can’t wait to prove Jade wrong. That no, we did not move on from each other. I know that with deadly certainty when Kay’s new recruit, Maria, throws her head back in a fake laugh.

“You’re too funny,papi.”

Kay eyes me, then Maria. Yeah, if there’s something we all know, it’s that my humor really isn’t my greatest asset.

I let Maria flirt with me tonight for one purpose and one only. Just to prove to myself yet one more time that I feel absolutely nothing for other women. I haven’t since high school. Since Jade and I started dating. Even before that.

I’ve not fucked one woman since Jade, and it isn’t going to happen tonight. It isn’t going to happenever.

“Anyway,” Kay yawns. She’s been bored to death for the last thirty minutes. “Now you know where to bring them, yeah?”

Maria’s new mission is to flirt with the men who owe us money and bring them here so I can easily torture them in our basement until them or their families find a solution.

“Absolutely.” Maria nods. “And do I also get an invite when I’m not bringing anyone with me?” Her suggestion takes this to a level of uncomfortable I’m not willing to deal with.

“No.”

She frowns, confused, and sits back. “Okay, papi. Next time.”

“Maria, I’ll start giving you names tomorrow,” Kay explains. “I can give you their addresses, but where to find them exactly is a different problem—”

Her phone rings, and she looks down, huffing. She hangs up on whoever.

“Often they know we’re coming for them, so they’ll be avoiding staying at home and—”

Her phone rings again. “For fuck’s sake,” she mutters.

“Everything okay?” I ask.

“Got this unknown number that keeps calling me.”

I lean forward. “Maybe it’s important.”

“Or maybe the feds are trying to lock me up,” she grunts. “If they want to talk to me, they can serve me or arrest me.”

I nod. It wouldn’t be the first time the feds looked closely into Kay. She’s the head of a gang, after all, but they never end up finding anything. That’s what having the Wolves’ protection is like. The Bratva has her back because she does good work for them.

“It’ll be fine.” She shrugs, unaffected, just annoyed that she can’t keep going with her conversation. There’s not much that can faze the girl.

Her phone rings again. She looks down at the screen, initially annoyed, but her face relaxes right away, and she picks up, not caring about this situation anymore.

“Mommy!” The little voice is loud enough that I can hear it even without the speaker on. “Nana screamed because Livie she doesn’t say thank you. Nana screamed!”

Exhausted, Kay runs a hand across her face.

“Mommy! Can you hear, Mommy? Can you hear?”

“Yes, Lia, I can hear. Give the phone to Nana.”

As I’m assuming the phone is being passed from her daughter to her mother, Kay stands up. “I’m off. I’m driving to my mom’s tomorrow morning, but I’ll see you next Friday?”

“Next Friday?” Maria asks.

“Yeah, it’s Ethan’s birthday. You should come. I’m sure he’d love you to be here.”
