I take a tiny step back, creating as much space between us as possible on this small surface. I’m scanning the area for the creature that has likely come to take me out—no doubt employed by my former coach—but I can’t see it.

“You cannot be scared of spiders. You need to kill it,” Aliyah says.

“Me?” I point to my chest. “No fucking way am I going near it. Wherever it is.”

“It went under the sofa,” she tells me. “And I’m not killing it, so you have to.”

I open my mouth to respond when I hear the crack, and then we’re both stumbling as our makeshift platform collapses underfoot. Again, I reach a hand out and catch her so she doesn’t fall to her ass. Without thinking, I pick her up and run to the kitchen counter, jumping on it with my babysitter still in my arms. Aliyah shrieks, and I swear the sound nearly deafens me.

Great, now I won’t even be able to hear the spider coming for me.Do spiders make sounds?

“Get off me. Let me go,” Aliyah hisses, and I drop my hands from her waist. “You need some clothes. Stop touching me when you’re naked.”

“That’s usually when women want me to touch them, sweetheart. It’s even more fun if you’re naked too.” I wink at her.

“Ew, and never going to happen,” she says. “You need to find and kill that spider. We can’t stay up here all day.”

“I’m not going anywhere near that thing.”

“Fine. I’ll call one of my brothers.” She smiles with an added twinkle in her eye. “It’ll be like killing two birds with one stone, because when they come over and see you up here with me,naked, they will shoot first and ask questions later. Then they’ll handle the spider, and I can go on with my life like this whole day never happened.”

I don’t even know how to unpack all that. “I’m not afraid of your brothers,” I tell her. I’m a professional hockey player. Fighting is part of the deal.

“You’d be the first.” She laughs. “I don’t think I introduced myself to you properly.” She holds out a hand. “I’m Aliyah. Aliyah Monroe,” she repeats, and that’s when it hits me. The name. I finally recognize it.

Fuck me. Aliyah Monroe, the daughter of my new boss, JacobMonroe. The man who owns me. Owns my new team anyway. But that’s not all he is. Word on the street is that he’s the leader of Canada’s criminal underground. And those brothers she mentioned, one of them happens to be my new teammate. Yeah, this is not how I planned to start my life here in Vancouver.

“Fine, I’ll kill it. But not because I’m scared of your brothers,” I grunt.

“Whatever you say,” she sing-songs, appearing a little too happy with herself.

“I’m killing it because I’m not about to have my new boss hate me on day one. This…” I point between us. “...never happened.”

ChapterThree

I’m sitting on the kitchen counter watching Liam walk very tentatively down the hall, his naked back on full display. What a back it is, though. Rippling with muscles and still dripping water. I can’t believe I just got a front-row seat to all that is Liam King.

And I meanall.Every last inch of his nakedness is now burned into my memory. He returns to the living room with a hockey stick.

A hockey stick.

“You couldn’t have put on some clothes while you were in there?” I ask him, unable to take my eyes off his cock. I mean, it’s a freaking work of art. It deserves to be appreciated, right?

“You want this spider dead or what?” he fires back.

“Yes. But a hockey stick? How on earth are you planning to kill it with that?”

“The only thing I can work better than a hockey stick is the dick you can’t seem to stop staring at.”

When I look up at his face, he winks at me. “I hope that spider jumps up and bites itandthat the venom makes it swell and fall off,” I tell him.

“That is literally the meanest thing anyone has ever said to me,” he huffs, sounding wounded. He looks at the floor. “It can’t actually jump up and bite my dick, right?”

I shrug. “God works in mysterious ways.”

“You’re evil. Cute as fuck, but evil nonetheless.”

I sit and watch as he kicks the sofa out of the way. The spider is still there, just staring up at me. Okay, well, probably not at me.
