Here it was, the big reveal. Life as I knew it would change forever. Everybody’s life was about to change.

“According to the blood tests…”

All eyes were on me now, making me more uncomfortable. I felt anxious and wasn’t sure how to get straight to the point—other than, well…getting straight to the point.

“I’m not Aria’s biological father.”

I had finally said it. If the truth was supposed to set you free, then how come I felt like the walls were closing in on me? I needed someone to guide me through my emotional traffic.

“I knew it!” Mother snapped, standing up. “I knew you were never the biological father! You should have demanded a paternity test from this lying harlot ages ago! She was nothing but a penniless tramp then, and she still is!”

“Stop it!” I yelled. “Control yourself!”

There was no need for her to rage at Natalie in front of Aria. I was not her biological parent, but Natalie was.

“Mom, get out,” I demanded.

“No, I will not leave! It’s about time this sneaky little heretic hears what I have to say! She swindled our family and lied for money!”

“That is not true!” Natalie protested. “You offered me that check to stay away from Noah!”

“Shut your mouth, you filthy whore!”

“Hey! Calm down, Mother, or I’ll have security remove you from this room right now,” I angrily asserted.

She muttered to herself and sat down as Rick cut in to speak.

“These paternity results were stumbled upon by accident. I felt it was wrong to turn the other cheek after reviewing these findings. In addition, I would like to say that we discovered who Aria’s biological father is.”

“Rob,” Nat uttered, sinking into her chair as she stared into space.

“Yes, Mrs. Mitchell,” Rick said. “Robert is Aria’s biological father.”

“Are you kidding me right now?”

Rob seemed just as perplexed as I was. Finally, we had something in common.

“What more do you expect from a two-timing tramp?” Mom said hatefully. “You should be ashamed of yourself for making my son suffer all these years for nothing! His drug addiction wasyourfault! You almost ruined him!”

“All right, Mother, you’ve said enough.” Grabbing her arm, I was about to force her out when Evan intervened.

“I got this,” he reassured me and told her it was time to go.

“Justice has been served today!” Mom gloated.

There was nothing short of me losing my temper, but my brother finally got her out of the hospital room.

Natalie had stayed quiet throughout the humiliating confrontation. I guess she knew if she said anything, it would have fueled my mother’s hatred even more.

I apologized to Rick and asked him to explain the DNA results now that the room was calm. My eyes wandered over to Aria; she looked as if she had zoned out of the conversation. Ifonly I could open that secret vault in her mind: the place where she stored all her private thoughts about me. She wouldn’t look at me, and I wasn’t a mind reader.

When Rick finished his medical discussion, I thanked him and told him he did the right thing by revealing the paternity results. The awkwardness of my family drama was not something I wanted him to witness.

“I’ll give you a moment to yourselves,” he politely said. “Is your brother coming back?”

“I think so.”

“Excellent. I’ll return with the paperwork for the organ donation.”
