“Vanessa!” He shouted. “Step outside and cool down.”

“No! She needs to hear this!” The bitch locked her murderous gaze on me and said, “My husband may have been absent for most of your life, but he’s saved you from poverty, abuse, and your pathetic excuse for a mother!”

“Shut up!” I screamed in tears.

“This is how you repay him? By deliberately destroying his happiness?”

Noah demanded that she stop.

“You must have been plotting revenge from the moment you stepped into this house.”

“I have not!”

“And like fools, we welcomed you with open arms. All you’ve done is take advantage of our kindness and generosity!”

“Enough!” Noah thundered, more enraged than ever.

“I won’t allow you to destroy my marriage.Iam his wife, andyouneed to accept that!”

That steaming kettle in my mind was screaming as I lunged toward her. But Noah stepped in, and bear hugged me. I guess he feared I’d put my hands on hisprecious wifey.

“Let go!”

“Violence won’t fix this,” he urged. If he was concealing his anger, he was doing an amazing job.

“I’m not some delinquent!”

Vanessa continued to cry, causing my temper to shatter.

“I can’t believe how you are victimizing yourself, you lying bitch!” I yelled. “You don’t deserve him! You’re gonna regret lying to his face. The truth will come out. It always does!”

That was my last exchange with her before I stormed out and fled from the house in my Firebird. I didn’t want to stay under the same roof as that tramp for a minute longer.

Hopefully, he won’t follow me.

Racing down the street, I kept checking my rear-view mirror like a paranoid carjacker. I didn’t enjoy running away from conflict, but there was no point arguing with a liar. I also realized my pattern, how I ran when things got bad. Reaching a red light, I weighed my options: sleepover at Jess or Tammy’s. Even though Jessica would have happily let me stay over, I didn’t want to impose. Evan’s place was also an option, and he was technically family. Once the light went green, I stepped on the gas and headed toward his loft.

??

Progressive house music echoed down the narrow hallway that led to Evan’s unit. At least I wasn’t drunk like last time, I thought, approaching his front door. Composing myself, I gave three knocks and waited.

Why am I so nervous?Maybe he didn’t hear me.Making a second attempt, the door suddenly swung open.

“Aria, hey!” Evan’s brown eyes lit up. He looked happy to see me. I didn’t know whether to stare at his face or his abs; his jeans hung low at his hips, revealing his trim waist.

Is he flaunting his physique?I wondered.Oh God, why did I come here?It was too late to regret it now.

“I’m sorry for not calling first,” I said. “But—”

“Come back to bed, you sexy beast!” a woman yelled from inside. “I’m ready for another round!”

Crap! He’s got a chick over.

Evan seemed embarrassed as he laughed uncomfortably.

“I’m really sorry.” My face went flush. “This was such a stupid idea.” I turned to leave.
