“Noah!”

“She came tome,” Evan explained, catching up. “I wasn’t gonna kick her out when she needed me.”

The elevator reached our floor with adingbefore Noah stepped inside, ignoring his brother.

“I’m so sorry!”

“It’s all right, love. You’re always welcome here.”

Evan’s handsome face disappeared when Noah turned around, forcing me to face my reflection in the mirror.

“This is the last time she’ll ever come to you.” He sounded resentful. “I promise you that.”

The doors closed shut, cutting off all communication with my uncle. There was nothing but silence between Noah and me as he clenched my thighs.

“What are you, a Neanderthal?” I ridiculed. “You can put me down now. You made your point.”

I waited while he gripped my thighs like I was his private property.

“You said no silent treatments.”

“You need to learn when to shut up.”

“Don’t talk to me like that! How dare you?”

“I’m your father. I’ll speak to you as I please.”

“You’re abusing your authority.”

Noah let out a mirthless laugh. “She’s funny… ‘abusing my authority’…right.”

“Your reaction was so over the top.”

“O.T.T.,really? This is me being tame. I could do so much worse.”

“Is that a threat?”

“Projecting that chessboard into your reality again, Aria? If you wanna play chess, learn it properly… from the Master.”

“You’re an annoying, arrogant prick!”

“What else?”

“You’re so overbearing and overprotective! I hate it!”

“What else?”

“You can’t just decide for me all the time!”

“I know what’s best for my baby. What else?”

“No, you don’t!”

Sighing in defeat, I waited for the elevator to take us down. Arguing like this was a waste of energy, but I hated the silence between us; it triggered me. Even if we were arguing, it was better than him not speaking to me.

“Will you please let me down? We’ve reached our floor. I don’t need you to embarrass me further.”

“You embarrassed yourself.”
