It quickly occurred to me that I had contradicted myself. I was exactly in that sort of situation: me, Noah, and Vanessa. A love triangle from Hell.

“I can’t imagine how you could ever find yourself in that predicament,” Evan expressed.

“Why do you say that?”

“Because you’re stunningly attractive, smart, funny… You’re the entire package, Aria. Any guy that would hesitate to be with you would have to be gay.”

“You’re flattering me. And that’s not true—everyone has their ‘type.’ Chemistry is hard to explain. I don’t know if it’s because of physical appearance or energetic alignment. Maybe both.”

“First, I never give meaningless compliments. And second, I think you’re onto something here…”

“Thank you.” I smiled.

“This garden is huge.” He reached out his hand. “Let’s explore it.”

??

A stone cobbled pathway lit up with lanterns as I walked in the darkness. I strangely felt like Cinderella… all this magic would disappear at the stroke of midnight (including the fantasy of my perfect life). I would return to a reality of rags and endless hardships, minus Prince Charming.

Walking hand in hand with Evan, we headed toward a gazebo in the distance, decorated with string lights. It was more like a fancy garden tent with a polished wooden platform. Music echoed in the distance as we walked up the steps. The running sound of the water fountain was so soothing.

“I’m surprised no one else is out here,” I said, looking around.

“Well, technically, we’re supposed to be watching ‘the royals’ have their first dance.”

I laughed, glancing at the twinkling lights above me. “The sucky part is that Steph’s dancing with my date to one of my favorite songs,” I sighed. “Someone up there wants to torture me tonight.”

Like Noah does every night,I thought in dismay, fixating on the fountain in the distance.

“Dance with me,” Evan said.

“What?”

He took the drink out of my hand and placed it on the railing.

“Are you serious?”

“It’s not like we haven’t danced before.” He flashed a charming smile. “I’d be honored if you had this dance with me.”

What a gentleman.

Accepting his hand, I smiled when he wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me closer. We slowly swayed with the music, falling under what seemed like a love spell. Closing my eyes, I rested my head in the crook of Evan’s neck and surrendered to how safe he made me feel. I couldn’t understand why Noah always said he was dangerous.

“What was your high school prom like?” I asked.

“Lame.” Evan chuckled.

“You didn’t go?”

“I did, but my friends and I ditched our prom and drove up to my family’s lake house. All six of us had got baked out of our minds that weekend, and… well, the rest… you don’t want to know.”

“I do.”

“… inappropriate activities.”

“Ah. Okay.” I nervously laughed. “If you think proms are lame, then what are you doing here? You must be trying to score some serious points with Ms. Perez, huh?”

“I don’t need to help her chaperone to score points. I came because of you.”
