I cross my arms and pin him with a glare until he stands straight, a wide grin plastered across his face.

“Jesus, you should see your face.” He chortles out another round of laughter, swiping at his cheeks.

“Are you done?”

His back presses into the wall, and he suppresses more laughter. “Yeah.”

“You’re a prick.”

“Better than pretending to be saintly,” he replies. He sucks his lip ring into his mouth, rolling the ball between his teeth.

“One, you two gave me the nickname. Two, I’ve never claimed to be.”

Before he can respond, the door swings open and her brother comes storming into the hallway and stomping down the hall. The acid scent of anger heavily coats my tongue, and I move before thinking, barging into the apartment to make sure Audrey is okay. Felix is right behind me.

There is a noticeable disparity between the fresh, baked scent of brownies that usually clings to the air around her and the pungent, sour aroma of her sadness that envelopes me as soon as I come to a stop. She sits at the edge of the couch with her head bowed, eyes on her boots, and fingers curled into her palms.

“Are you okay?” I ask. The words hang in the air between us, and I share a look with Felix.

CHAPTER16

Audrey

As soon asthe door snaps shut, closing out the men in the hallway, I lock it. Not that a simple lock will keep a determined alpha out. With a deep breath, I lean against the surface. Sin watches me with a quizzical expression.

“What are you doing here, Aud?”

He crosses the small room that looks like a closet after moving into my new room that is bigger than this. In fact, I am positive that my walk-in closetisbigger than the whole place. The coffee table has a few takeout containers open with old food in them.

“Sin, you have to clean up after yourself. This isn’t the warehouse.” I automatically stack the styrofoam and push them into the almost full trash. “You are going to end up with flies, or worse.”

He shrugs when I turn back around. “Worry about the shit you have gotten yourself into. Have you seen this?”

He holds upThe Starand on the front of it is a blurry picture of me being forced into Austin’s car. I know it’s me and Sin knows it’s me, but the men we ran from wouldn’t know unless they had a clear picture.

“If there is a blurry picture out there of you, then there is a crystal clear one. That will place youwithAustin Fucking Zade, one of the easiest men to find in the city of New York because his name is on a fucking building. Do you know what that means, Aud?”

I swallow and lick my lips. I didn’t come here to be lectured. Even if it is coming from a place of worry.

“It’s fine.” I don’t tell him about earlier today outside The Clocktower. He would lose it.

He paces to the window. “Your fine and mine are two different things. I went through hell and back to get you out of there,” his voice rises, shaky with his anger. The acid scent flows off of him in waves, and I sink into the sofa.

“Sin, I know. I’m sorry. I told him to take me to jail and turn me in after–” So much for not mentioning this morning. Fuck. I drag my fingers through my hair.

“After?”

I sigh. “Breakfast this morning. The paparazzi were outside.”

“Shit. They could have a clear picture of you already. We have to run.” He moves to the bedroom and starts filling up his backpack. “We can get lost in Chicago or maybe go south to Atlanta.”

I fold my hands into my lap. “I’m not running.”

He stops mid thrust and stares at me like I’ve grown another head. “What do you mean you’re not running?” he asks slowly, like the words are unknown to him.

“I can’t.”I don’t want to.

“You’ve been with them for one night. One. Night. And you are brainwashed?”
