“She left?” His face falls, and he draws in a breath. “I thought…I guess it doesn’t matter what I thought.”

I lean against the counter, studying him for a moment. “You know, for someone who can take down opponents in the cage like a force of nature, you’ve got quite the vulnerability when it comes to Audrey.”

A faint blush dusts his cheeks, and he rubs the back of his neck. “Yeah, well… it’s not like I planned on falling for her.”

I chuckle. “Scent matching doesn’t exactly come with a manual, does it?”

He huffs a small laugh. “No, I suppose not.”

I push off the counter and approach him, my tone taking on a more serious note as I see his defeated expression. “Look, Saint, you’re not alone in this. I know what Audrey means to you, and believe me, I feel it too. We can make this work.”

He nods, his gaze falling to my hand. “What’s that?”

“This?” I feign innocence with a smile. “Oh, just a little note.”

“Felix,” he growls, and I laugh.

“It isn’t some declaration or anything, just that she will be back.” I hold it out for his inspection. He snags it from between my fingers and reads the words the same as I had.

“Where do you think she went?”

I shrug. I couldn’t even try to guess. It makes me realize how little I really know about our mate. I will rectify that as soon as possible.

“I’m going to get dressed and look for her,” he says.

He disappears back into his room to do just that, I assume. I’m pretty sure that he’d have better luck looking for a needle in a haystack than he will in finding the omega in the city. So I pour a glass of water and curl up on the couch to wait.

Saint reemerges a few minutes later dressed like a model in his plain jeans and t-shirt.

“How do you think you’ll find her?” I ask dryly.

“I’m not sure, but we’re going to add a tracker to her ass.”

I roll my eyes and mess with the ring on my eyebrow. “Right. I forgot you’ve turned into a caveman.”

He tugs his fingers through his hair, somehow making it fall just right without a brush. “I’m going to do what needs to be done.”

“You could text her,” I suggest. I’m pretty sure I’m the only one with her number.

“I didn’t get it from her, but I’m putting a tracking app on her phone the second I find her.”

He snags up his keys and sunglasses just as a knock sounds at the door. He is across the room as if his feet are on fire, swinging open the door before I can move.

“Audrey–” he breathes like he’s just seen the sun for the first time.

“I brought breakfast,” she replies, her voice full of cheerfulness that makes me smile as I climb to my feet and approach the door.

“Mmmm, any chocolate donuts?” I ask, pushing past a still stunned Saint.

She grins, and I can’t help but return the wide smile. “Maybe–” she says, her nose crinkling in the most adorable way. “I just told her to give me a variety.”

I nudge Saint out of the way and urge her into the penthouse. Following her to the kitchen island. The door shuts behind us as Saint pulls himself out of whatever feelings he dived into.

“Where did you go?” Saint asks, his voice verging on bark.

I pull my lip ring between my teeth as I glance at him. Maybe I’m more at ease because she already wears my mark. Whatever it is, his tone makes me want to pull her into my arms and protect her from the big bad alpha. Which is silly because Saint will never hurt her.

Before she can reply, I say, “It doesn’t matter. You’re back with gifts of sweet bakery goods that smell as amazing as you.”
