“What the hell happened last night? You didn’t even call to tell me you were at the clubhouse, so I have to hear about it from my secretary?” he demanded.

“I told you I would call when I had something to tell you.” I didn’t have anything to tell him.

“A car crashing through the building you are in seems to be something!”

Well, it was, but no one knew exactly what it meant. “I’m fine, and so is everyone else.”

“Are you going to tell me that these guys aren’t into anything illegal now?” Dad demanded. “Buildings blowing up and cars crashing into buildings don’t happen to innocent people, Dove.”

I had to agree with him, but I didn’t think the Iron Fiends had been the ones to start any of this. They were all clueless. “You have to know some things since you are asking me to find dirt on them.”

“If I knew anything, I wouldn’t need you there.”

“But what makes you think that something is going on with them?”

Dad sighed. “There has been talk, Dove. That is all I can tell you.”

“Anyone can talk, Dad. I wouldn’t think you would be the one to listen to rumors and whatnot.”

“I listen to rumors when they come from trustworthy and prominent people, Dove. Just keep digging, and for god's sake, try not to get blown up.” He ended the call without another word, and I threw my arms in the air.

That was Dad. He was concerned about me, but he was more concerned about what he needed for his job.

The job always came first.

Chapter Nine

Throttle

“Look into the girls.”

“What?” Aero called. “They don’t have anything to do with this.”

“You sure of that?” Yarder asked. “I’m sure you think you can vouch for Sloane, Aero, but in reality, there is no way you know everything about her.”

“She has nothing to do with this!” Aero thundered.

Sloane didn’t have anything to do with it. We all knew it, but we were at a loss on who it actually had to do with. It was just best to look into everyone.

“Well, then check into her, and then you can move on to one of the other girls.” Yarder looked at me. “Figure out Dove.”

Dove didn’t have anything to do with this either.

Neither did Olive.

Faye was the one that I was suspicious of.

“Will do.”

“And you can also be the one to keep an eye on her,” Yarder added.

Now that I wasn’t in to. “Uh, why don’t you just have Aero take care of her, too? She’s going to be around Sloane most of the time, so does it really make any sense for me to keep an eye on Dove?”

Yarder tapped his fingers on the table and glared at me.

“Bro,” Pirate whispered. “There are no cameras in this room, so you better prepare yourself for an ass beating from Yarder.”
