Without another word, he lifted her and carried her inside. Giulia had prepared the evening meal and had already left, so it was just the two of them.
“Want a foot rub?” He asked, slipping off her sandals.
“That feels good. I could get used to this.” She told him, leaning back against the pillows with a sigh. She looked at him for a few seconds.
“What is it?”
“You never talked about him.”
“The man who donated his sperm?”
She nodded. “If it’s too painful- “
“More like I don’t care enough to feel anything.” His rubbing of her legs was soothing and making her drowsy. “I have his name and, at one point, I seriously considered legally changing it, but I decided against it. Are you sure you don’t want anything to eat.”
“I’m full.” She patted her stomach. “Come here, darling.”
“We're not having sex.”
She burst out laughing, dark eyes twinkling. “Get your mind out of the gutter. I just want you to hold me.”
“That always leads to sex.” Taking off his shoes, he joined her on the bed, pulling her into his arms.
“Was there ever any relationship at all?” She asked sober as she snuggled against him.
“None. Or at least, none that I can remember.” He realized talking about the guy wasn’t difficult, not with her. “He fled when I was six years old and didn’t look back.”
“Do you know why?”
“I asked her at one point and she told me that the responsibility of a child was too much for him. That was it, nothing more than that.”
“How did you feel?”
He glanced down, amused to see the rapt expression on her exquisite face. “I was angry and then I grew out of it.” He kissed her forehead.
“He died before you got wealthy.”
“Which was perfect for me, because there was no way I’d have accepted him if he came running back. Are we done?”
She nodded, stifling another yawn.
“I think we are.”
“Good, now go to sleep.”
“Maxwell?”
“Yes?”
“He was a prick.”
“I agree.” Lifting his chin, he gave her a lingering kiss.
