“I don’t know. Perhaps.” She was six months pregnant and, as if by magic, the negative symptoms had disappeared and her pregnancy was smooth sailing. Enough for Maxwell to stop hovering and worrying about her. “Maxwell is adamant that this baby is going to be it.”

“You’re glowing.” Michael told her with a shake of his head. They were having lunch at Muse’s. “You’ve started back with your charities?”

“Just a few of them. The children’s home that got burned out needs some attention and I persuaded Maxwell that taking it on wasn’t going to hurt me. Look! I’m eating red meat when a few months ago I couldn’t even stand the smell of it.”

“You’ve gained weight.”

“Which proves my point.”

“And the moving?” He asked her curiously.

“We spend the weekdays at the apartment and weekends at Dad’s. He’s grateful that Maxwell has agreed to the arrangement.”

“What about when the baby comes?”

“We’ll divide the time. My husband’s apartment is more of a bachelor pad.”

“I don’t see him agreeing to live at your Dad’s.”

“There’s a lot of space for a child. I was thinking of having a treehouse built.”

“That might make it more attractive to him.” Michael picked up his drink and took a sip as he looked around the room. “Your husband’s mother was part of a set of twins.”

“They usually skip a generation.” She shook her head. “As much as I’d like our son to have a sibling, I’m not sure I could handle two at the same time.”

“The aunt must be thrilled.”

Alessia smiled. “She is. I like her. She’s trying so hard to make up for what Maxwell went through in the past.”

“I have to say, being with you, makes a huge difference. I believe your husband cracked a joke the other day and actually smiled.”

“He loves me.”

“Girl, that’s the understatement of the century. He worships the ground you walk on. I’m happy for you.”

“Alessia?” Maxwell fumbled for the light switch. He sensed she wasn’t next to him.

“Darling?” Swinging his legs off the bed, he hurried into the bathroom to see her leaning against the tiles.

“What is it?”

“I’m not ready.”

“Alessia-“ He stopped abruptly at the liquid pooling at her feet. “Oh Christ! How long- “

“Twenty minutes ago. I thought it was a false alarm.” She breathed in sharply, one hand clutching her stomach. “I’m two weeks early-“

“It doesn’t matter. You should have woken me.” For a minute, he didn’t know what to do. A strangled cry galvanized him into going over and picking her up. She was wet. He was going to have to change her and call an ambulance or just take her to the hospital himself.

Grabbing the phone, he dialed the doctor’s number. “Her water broke.” He told Dr. Jones tersely. “Don’t bother, I’m taking her. I’ll get there quicker.”

Hanging up the phone, he cursed the fact that they weren’t at her Dad’s place, and she must have been in pain and didn’t wake him.

There would be time enough to berate her later after all of this was over. Hurrying over to the drawer he dragged out a sweater and pair of leggings. It’d started snowing last night and he knew the trip to the hospital was going to be a nightmare.

“Breathe, darling.” He encouraged as he helped her to dress.
