“My bag- “

“I know where it is. Boots.” Running into the vast closet, he grabbed the nearest pair and came back to slide them on. “Breathe.” He said again as she bent over. “Let me just-“

Lunging to his feet, he put on sweat pants, a sweater and shrugged into his jacket. Deciding it would be quicker, he picked her up along with the bag and headed downstairs.

“I’m sorry, darling.” His face was white with strain and he had to force himself not to dump her in the passenger seat of the Corvette. Buckling her in, he raced around to the driver’s side, praying as he made his way out the drive.

“Daddy, please call him.”

“When we get to the hospital. I need to concentrate on driving.”

He made it there in record time and was relieved Dr. Jones was out the front waiting with a gurney.

“Suit up, we’re taking her straight into the delivery room.”

Mark Joseph was born at noon on February twentieth, weighing seven pounds and two ounces and screaming at the top of his lungs. His weary and exultant mother insisted on trying to breastfeed him.

“Oh, look at him latching onto the nipple” She murmured.

Her Dad had been notified as well as Michael and they’d both showed up hours ago. Aunt Hilda was under the weather and couldn’t make it, but they’d Face-timed her.

Handing him to the nurse reluctantly, she watched as they left the room.

“How do you feel?” Her husband asked as he came and sat on the edge of the bed.

“Like I just ran a marathon.” She admitted with a laugh. “What about you?”

“I think I aged about ten years in the last few hours.” He brushed the hair back from her forehead, so he could kiss her. “That ride to the hospital felt like twelve weeks instead of minutes. Remind me to shout at you when you’re up to it. You didn’t wake me.”

“You came in so late last night- “

“Alessia.”

“Okay.” She rolled her eyes with a sigh. “I thought it was a false alarm. I’ve been getting those over the last four weeks. I decided to wait it out.”

“We’re in this together.”

“I know. About us not having another baby- “

“That argument is closed.” He told her firmly.

“The second time is always easier- “

Getting into bed with her, he pulled her into his arms. “I can’t go through that again. Once is enough.”

“We‘ll wait until Mark is a year old- “

He solved the problem by kissing her soundly on the lips. “No.”

He should’ve known he was no match against her pleas. Against his judgement, she managed to wear him down. As soon as their son turned one, she started again, until he had no choice but to give in to her.

This time, the pregnancy was surprisingly easy. Their daughter, Olivia Hilda, was born six months after her brother’s first birthday, capturing her Daddy’s heart.

“She looks like you.” He said huskily as he stared at his beautiful daughter. What little hair she had was dark and her eyes were a blend of gold and brown. With his son perched on his hip, he held his daughter cradled in one arm.
