Quin looked away.

“He’s here but he doesn’t want to see you.”

“What? What are you talking about? I need to see him. Something’s not right,” I explained desperately.

Quin looked heartbroken as he squeezed out and closed the door behind him.

“What are you doing?”

Taking my arm, he pulled me back towards the stairs to talk in private.

“Titus, he doesn’t want to see you.”

“What? Why?”

“Because he said it’s over between you two,” Quin said sadly.

“Over? What are you talking about? He went to the restaurant to break up with Sey. He was doing it so that we could be together.”

“I don’t know what to tell you, Titus. He told me it’s over between you and him and he’s not changing his mind.”

“No. I won’t accept it. If he wants to end things after everything we’ve done, what we’ve been through together, then he’s gonna have to tell me himself,” I said trying to push past Quin.

“Titus, stop. Stop!” Quin insisted. “You can’t force yourself on him,” he yelled getting my attention.

“I wasn’t trying to force myself on him. I was trying to talk to him.”

“But he doesn’t want to talk to you!” Quin caught himself. Pain appeared in his eyes. “He doesn’t want to talk to you,” he said sympathetically.

“Why not?” I said realizing what was happening.

“I don’t know.”

“This isn’t fair. So, now what? Am I not invited to game nights anymore? Am I not supposed to talk to you or Cage?”

“He’s moving out,” Quin said heartbroken.

“What?” I said shocked. “Why?”

“I don’t know.”

“Where’s he moving to?”

“I don’t know.”

I looked around lost before finding Quin again.

“But, I love him. And he loves me. I know he does.”

“Sometimes it takes more than love,” Quin said with tears in his eyes. “I’m sorry,” he said before we both fell into each other’s arms.

Why? Why had he disappeared? The possibilities tortured me. As the weeks followed, I could barely think of anything else. It affected every part of my life. I lost my edge on the football field. I rarely attended classes. I felt like a zombie walking through life.

Luckily, the speech I gave at the town meeting was enough to give incorporation a life of its own. Others began volunteering their time to it. I didn’t have to be the one doing everything anymore. And when we won the vote and submitted our proposal to the state, the state’s response was very encouraging.

The letter said that our petition would be evaluated at the beginning of the new year. That was a lot sooner than any of us would have guessed. Considering we had followed the state’s requirements to the letter, there was no reason why Snow Tip Falls wasn’t going to be made official.

I only wish I could have felt our victory. Whether it involved Snow Tip Falls or our team’s wins, I felt nothing. The only thing I could think of was Lou. Where was he? Why didn’t he want to talk to me? Didn’t he love me?
