“My résumé, Francie?”

“Maybe I over-stepped. Just a little?” Francie shrugged. “You had a file of old college records in a drawer, and I knew where you’ve been working. I figured you’ve been so busy that it wouldn’t hurt to take a chance. And hopefully, end up being a nice surprise.”

“They want an interview for a teaching and research position at a livestock research facility south of Dallas!”

“Uh...are you upset?”

“How could I be? If they hire me, I’ll have the kind of career I’d always hoped for!”

“Are you ready for this?” he asked, his gaze fixed on hers. “No second thoughts?”

“I could never want for anything more.”

Katie came running toward them, her cheeks rosy, the flower garland in her hair askew. “It’s time, Daddy, we gots to go now. Molly says!”

She’d just called him Daddy.

He reached down and scooped her up into his arms, only slightly favoring his damaged shoulder. “There couldn’t be a happier guy on the face of this earth.”

And then they walked together into the waiting crowd.
