Without stopping the lifesaving procedure, I looked up to the only one who had helped me so far. His fantastic mirror eyes locked to mine as I begged, “Help me.”

Most likely, he couldn’t hear me over all the yelling men now in the bunker, but it didn’t stop him from making another judgment call. He rushed around the men then dropped to his knees, taking over. “Give him air when I say!”

I nodded, tucking hair behind my ears to be ready.

“Now!” he ordered.

Mouth to mouth, I breathed air into the man that I had wished would die.

As my new friend pumped vigorously on Onus’s chest, I got angry. “Breathe!”

“He can hear you,” the voice confirmed.

I gave him more air. “I know you can hear me!” I smacked above the pumping hands. “Breathe!”

“Or Rosa won’t come back,” the voice instructed.

“Or Rosa won’t come back!”

Onus started gasping for air. “Rosa.”

I didn’t delay leaving his cell. I leapt over his head and back to Thunder’s side. Shoving men out of my way, I kneeled and began to pray. “I’ve done everything I’ve been asked. The only thing I’ve eve’ asked in return is him, my Thunda. Give him back ta me. He’s mine.”

I opened my eyes to see Thunder, not moving and looking even paler.

Diesel was still pressing on his chest, tears pouring as he watched me and , “Bring him back, baby.”

No longer able to hold back my own tears, they burst from me. I laid my hands on the chest I needed to rise in order for me to continue breathing. “Thunda, you promised me.” I laid my face to listen for a heart that used to beat for me. “Everlastin’.”

Nothing.

Diesel started to unravel. “Oh god! Thunder!”

Men started to gather, giving him encouraging pats and squeezes on his shoulders.

Tears dripping to the chest that refused to move, I realized I was losing my best friend. It’s amazing how unselfish you can become when your everything must go. I loved him so much that I didn’t want him to suffer for one more moment. I realized that his memories of agony, his painful years of abuse, were coming to an end. That was the only peace I could find during the absolute saddest moment of my life. If it was his time to go, I wanted him to have not one regret for leaving me behind. “What pleases you, eases me.”

Trying to find serenity, I thought of the pictures on Moola’s wall. If it was time for Thunder to go to heaven, I hoped Ani and Rosa were waiting for him.

Dio… I thought of Thunder as a little boy, drawing the picture of Dio’s red eyes.

The Demon and the Stripper.

Then of Thunder’s red eyes in real life.

Oh my god. Dio is like Thunder!

Hellion!

My face still on Thunder’s chest, I whispered, “Hellion, help him.” I sobbed a newfound hope, “Please bring my Thunda back to me.”

Diesel rested a hand on my back. “He made me promise… He knew this was going to happen” He covered his face and cried. “Oh Jesus, I can’t do this.” He crumbled over his son. “Rosa., I’m so sorry. I failed him.”

Tears rained down on Thunder as I quietly begged, “Hellion, bring him back ta me. I love him. I love you.”

There was more than one connection made that day.

Inhale…
