Sitting at the bar about an hour later, I held my breath as Destiny left the girls, who were hugging each other, then came over to us. Wiping tears, she said, “I’m sure I don’t need to explain the magic beings they are.”

Diesel and I shook our heads no.

“They are relieved to know their mother is still alive.”

A gust of breath fled from my lungs, finally feeling like I could breathe again. That was until she added, “I didn’t tell them she is close to death.”

Heart fucking hammering in my chest, I couldn’t speak.

She nodded. “My intuition says she’s late-twenties, but the men holding her against her will consider her to be old. And no one has been able to impregnate her since she delivered Demi.”

I covered my gaping mouth so I didn’t vomit on this kind woman. Rya was sixteen. That meant this woman had been so young when…

She took my free hand. “Your fondness for the girls is layered.” She took a deep breath. “Now try to stay calm. I’m going to tell you everything I saw to help you find this dear woman, but… Their mother … her name is Emma, and… she is your soulmate, honey.”

I panted for air. “W-W-What?”

“Oh my god.” Diesel gasped, flabbergasted. “Dee, no.”

“I’m sorry,” she replied gently. “And, Diesel, I mean it. That woman doesn’t have much time.”

I lurched from the stool, staggering away from everyone staring at me with pity.

It would require all the strength I had to find the girls’ mother. I’d set my own life aside. I needed a fury to build inside me so I wouldn’t fail them. So I wouldn’t fail her.

Trying to stop my feet from stumbling, I spotted Rya on her knees, praying for her mother.

I’m praying, too, baby. I’m praying for fucking fire.
