Page 132 of Hearing her Cries

Sydney tried to get out again, yanking Pen behind her. They kicked her back in.

“Damn, this one fights!” one man yelled. “Hold her down until we can get out of here!”

Two of them knocked her to the carpet of the van and just held her there. Hands on her neck. Cutting off her breath.

The last thing she saw before she lost consciousness was Pen’s terrified face as the van peeled away.

Shit,shit, shit.

Vaughn cursed as Hector slammed the van into gear and pulled out. As fast as he could. They hadn't meant to get anybody killed. He hadn’t thought any of his boys would get killed like that. He'd only ever seenoneguard with that skinny-assed bitch they had in the back now.

Crispin Maria's sister.

Ted was dead. He didn't give a shit about the bodyguards and those other two girls—but Ted? He'd known Ted for ten years now.

Ted hadn't deserved it. To die in front of his younger brother like that.

Neither had Paul. He’d taken one from a damned guard’s gun right off the bat.Damn it.Lard ass had spent too much time playing shooting games on the video console. Thought he’d known what to do in real life. Shit.

Two of the men were dead. No one had counted on that. They’d be identified eventually. Which could lead right back to Ted. And the rest of them.

It was the redhead bitch’s fucking fault. Why had she had extra guards? Of course, he hadn’t expected Gregory’s fucking target surrogate to be walking around with the damned redhead and the blue-haired sister either.

Why hadn’t Gregorythoughtthis through better? Done better research?

He reached out and kicked the redhead in the leg, just for the hell of it. “Guardian of hell. Always trouble. Her and her damned sisters. Should just kill all of them once and for all. From the one in St. Louis, all the way down to this prime bitch right here.”

Crispin Maria’s sister just stared at him, terror in her eyes. He growled, lunged at her like a damned dog. Just for the hell of that, too. She tried to pull her skinny legs back. He grabbed her knees just to mess with her. “Hey, gorgeous. We’ll play later. I promise.”

Hell, girl had no meat on her bones at all. She was even thinner than Crispin Maria.

Ted's brother was shaking. Rocking back and forth. Crying. Of course, he was. His brother had just taken a damned bullet between the eyes. Who the hell knew that strawberry-blonde bitch in glasses couldshootlike that? She’d looked like a damned pasty-faced nerd. Hell, maybe she’d just gotten lucky?

The guy was going on and on about making her pay.

They didn't need to think like that. Not right now, anyway. Ted’s brother could go after her later.

They had to do what they had to do. "I'm sorry, man. But we need to focus. Cops are going to be looking for us now. We'll deliver the girls to the old man, and you can have Ted's share. Get out of town for a while. Until it blows over."

The guy was inconsolable, though. Well, if he’d lost Hector, Vaughn could understand how that would hurt. Closest thing to a brother he'd ever had. And family mattered. He hooked an arm around the guy’s shoulder. Did what he could to help. If he’d lost Hector today. He fought shaking like a pussy himself. He had to be strong. Do what he had to do.

For Crispin Maria.

He kicked out, pushed the redheaded bitch's leg out of the way. "Damned bitch. Demon from hell. Ruins everything every time."

He looked up. Into the dark eyes of the girl watching him now. There was real terror on her pretty face.

Hell, she looked like she was in shock. Like she was going to hurl, or pass out or something.

She looked like a damned fucking kid.

She did look like Crispin Maria. No denying they were sisters. "Quit looking at me, kid!"

She shrank back. In fear. Hell, shewasjust a kid. He was old enough to be her father, too. He was probably her damned nightmare or something.

The redhead was waking.
