Anything in my great grandmother’s book is divine.

She opens the oven and the scent of Heaven hits me. She takes out the apple pie and we prepare individual servings in the desert bowls with ice cream.

My phone buzzes with a text in my jeans pocket.

Earlier Laila the arts director at the New York City Ballet said she was going o send me a link so I could start building my staff profile and do the mandatory online training.

I expect that to be her so I grab my phone.

“One sec, Gina. This should be the director.”

“Take your time, I’ll be fine.” She smiles back at me and heads out of the kitchen with two bowls of pie.

I open the message expect it to begin with some pleasant congratulatory opening because how Laila’s messages have all began, but it doesn’t. And it’s not from her.

The message says:

Heard you got married, but that’s okay.

I’m sure I can fix that problem.

You will always be mine, Baby doll.

I’ll see you soon,

Sasha.

My throat closes and my hands shake so hard the phone falls and lands on the floor.

God. Sasha.

He just messaged me.

He said he’d see me soon.

Is he out of prison?

How?

Please God, no. This can’t be happening. It can’t.

But it is.

Chapter28

Jericho

The motherfucker is still behind bars.

I’ve just gotten the conformation and I’m still trying to figure out how he got River’s number and was able to message her from prison.

Those are all things I might not get answers for and realistically they don’t matter. What they are is a heads-up of the trouble that’s most assuredly brewing.

Although there are no details or records discussing Sasha’s early release, I don’t think it’s to come.

I also believe the asshole will make good on those promises he made in that text.

I march up the stairs and head up to the bedroom where I left River.
