We came straight home after she got the message. We didn’t tell Gina what was going on because we didn’t want her to worry. However, River’s father knows.

I just had the pleasure of calling him to give him an update only to hear him tell me this was expected because he knew how much Sasha loved his daughter. Then he spent ten minutes telling me about how wonderful things were when they got together.

That man tried my patience all night, but everything he said in that conversation pushed my buttons in all the wrong ways. He sounded pro-Sasha and anti-Jericho. I couldn’t understand it when he must have known how Sasha treated River.

Worse,Sasha is in prison, but I suppose that’s still better than being Tobias Grayson’s son.

Eden stayed with River while I checked things out on Sasha. I got anyone I knew who could get me intel quickly to work on this as fast as possible. They got back to me within the hour, but I still feel empty.

Empty and fucking helpless.

Those are not good feeling to have when you know your wife is a target for some psycho she was previously engaged to and he wants her back.

I slam a fist into the side of my leg and tamp down the urge to breathe fire.

I calm myself even more when I walk in the bedroom and find River and Eden sitting side by side on the bed.

River looks even paler than she did when got the message. I guess that’s because she’s had time to think and allow what’s happened to sink in.

Eden stands and meets me half-way. She looks as worried as I feel. She’s just River’s friend though. I’m going crazy because it’s my job to protect my wife and I feel like I can’t. I can’t fight what I can’t see.

“Is he out?” Eden asks in a hurried voice.

River grabs the edge of the bed, her knuckles turning white.

“No. Sasha is still in prison,” I confirm much to their relief. “I’m still checking things out to see what’s happening.”

“Okay. That’s good right?” Eden looks back at River then at me again. A trace of hope flickers across her face and she tries to smile but it doesn’t quite reach her lips.

“It’s good for the moment.”

Her lips part and she stares back at me for a few beats before her chest caves. “Is there anything I can do?”

I shake my head. “No. It’s late. You should go home. I’ll let you know if there’s any updates.”

“Alright. Please let me know if you need me to come back or anything like that.”

“Of course.” I give her a curt nod.

She gives back to River and gives her a hug then she goes.

I walk over to River and take Eden’s place opposite her on the bed.

River stares back at me with an empty look in her eyes. “It’s funny I shouldn’t be surprised. I feel like I should have known this would happen. I just didn’t know it would have been so soon.”

“Hey, baby I don’t want you to worry about this.”

“Jericho, there is everything to worry about here.Everything.” Her voice shakes and quivers. As if it’s lost in the wind. “You don’t know what this guy is like. He’s in prison for a reason. He’s dangerous and the worst person I’ve ever met. There’s no point checking things out. It’s obvious he’s going to be released in the very near future, and if he doesn’t know now he’ll know soon that it was me who sent him to prison. I just know it’s going to happen.”

She breaks down and the tears come. I pull her in to hold her bust it’s like she’s crying for everything that’s ever happened.

Hearing her in so much pain and knowing she must be so terrified breaks me, and I blame myself.

It always comes back to me. One bad choice, one bad move on the chessboard of life and this is what happened.

I allowed myself to become a pawn and I fucked things up for everyone else. Especially River.

If not for me she wouldn’t know Sasha, because she would have been with me.
