Five million though. Wow. I guess the offer was tempting enough to disregard his daughter’s happiness and safety.

The emails that follow are Neil checking in again to let Sasha know he can’t get past my firewalls. Then an email dated last week shows details of some new age hacking tech they secured on the black market. I notice the date of the email is the same day that River got that message from Sasha.

God,I remember how awkward the dinner was with Neil. Every time I spoke he looked like he wanted to burn me alive.

I find the details of the hacking tech and realize it would have definitely been able to hack me because it uses sophisticated AI technology designed to copy the system it’s trying to hack. It’s like a virus, but it can also copy any antivirus software to fight it.

The next message is Neil’s eureka moment with all the shit about me from the past and the marriage contract.

That was Sunday night. By Monday morning—yesterday now—Neil had a hundred thousand deposited in his account. No wonder he looked like the god he was trying to call me.

Fucking Neil.He got me good. He really got me.

I sit there for a few moments, staring at the computer screen as I mull over this fresh hell.

Sasha wants River back, so he came up with the perfect plan to take me out of the picture.

I can’t allow that fucking monster back in her life. Even if she doesn’t end up with me, I won’t stand back and allow him to have my wife.

Iwon’tdo it. That means River needs to know about what her beloved father has been up to.

Fucking Neil. I hate what happened to him as a result of my mistakes but if he’s going to light me on fire, his daughter needs to see who he is too.

Gritting my teeth I decide to do a final check to see where else Neil might have stuck his nose. I have a number of things going on that I need to protect including serious clientele money.

I search his hacking code and sure enough the asshole has been roaming around my private business like he’s walking in the park.

Something catches my attention when his code pops a few times during the period before his accident eight years ago.

The majority of listings are to gain access to a link I would recognize in my sleep.

It’s the same link those hackers used when I was in college to contact me. I remember it because the middle numbers and letters look like they spell the word Rabbit.

That link was how we communicated.

What I’m looking at is a virtual footprint that exists as a ghost in the system, but my tech allows me to see it as if the link is still active.

That would have been the same way Neil got the details on me from the past.

But why would he be in touch with the same people who wanted to steal his designs?

That makes no sense.

I click into the first contact which shows up like a Discord message and clarity comes straightaway. The message from the hackers says:

If you sell us those designs we’ll give you two million dollars.

Neil responds by asking for five million.

My mouth drops open, nearly hitting the floor when I realize what I’m seeing. Neil was planning to sell his design.

Jesus Christ. That’s what the asshole was doing.

I get that they werehisdesigns but when you work for a company like the one he did, who would have put in serious funding, everything you come up with is theirs.

The next correspondence shows failed negotiations because Neil wanted more money. I can guess what happened next.

I did.
