I happened.

The hackers found me. They probably did so because of my connection to Neil through River. People like them check everybody out in your life to see who will be threats or who they can use.

I was the latter and like an idiot I fell right into their trap.

I’m fairly certain Neil would have known it was the same guys who fucked me over when he got his intel on me, yet he proudly told me that I was worse than my father and I allowed myself to be tricked.

What an absolute asshole.

Eager to gather in all the shit I can, I click into the last listing of Neil’s hacking code. It’s dated a few months after his last correspondence with the hackers.

It takes me to a short clip of footage he wiped from his company’s surveillance system.

“Well, well, what didn’t you want people to see Neil?” I speak to the link as the footage opens and begins playing.

It shows Neil walking into his office where his business partner is sitting behind a desk. The same guy who died that night. I remember his name was Rory.

From the time of the clip I can tell it’s after midnight.

“What are you doing here?” Rory asks.

“How fucking dare you ask me that? They kept you on. You don’t even deserve this job,” Neil barks at him. “I got you this job and you decide to screw me over?”

“Calm down Neil. They suspected you of trying to sell the designs. You should be grateful they didn’t do worse to you.”

“Grateful? I’ll show you what grateful is. Those were my designs. Not yours or anybody’s. They were mine.” Neil pulls a gun from his back pocket and points it at Rory who now freezes in fear.

I stare back at the screen wide eyed and in shock. I’m even wondering if the drink I had earlier is screwing with me, but I know it’s not. What I’m witnessing is the night of the accident.

Neil rushes forward to grab Rory, but when he gets to him Rory launches forward to fight back.

Neil shoots him in his chest and Rory cries out staggering backwards, but he manages to regain his footing and throw himself on Neil.

The two fall to the ground in a flurry of fists, but Neil is still holding the gun.

The gun goes off again. Moments later Neil gets up but he’s not holding the gun anymore. Rory is still on the ground.

This is not the way the world was told this story. Neil reported that it was Rory who went crazy and burst in that night with a gun.

There was also no mention of missing surveillance.

Surveillance which showed the opposite of what Neil said.

The surveillance the world saw on the news was of him shouting at Rory to put the gun down then Rory shot Neil just as he turned to run away.

I remember watching Rory kneeling on the floor covered in blood but Neil told everyone they’d gotten into a fight.

The rest of the blanks fill in as I continue watching the truth unfold. Neil rushes to a computer and types something on the keyboard I can’t see, then he looks up in horror as he sees Rory.

“Rory put the gun down.” Neil shouts. “Put the gun down.”

The clip ends there.

The screen goes blank

The thoughts in my mind freeze.

I stare at the blank screen allowing my brain to work through what I just saw but I’m numb from the shock of this discovery.
