“You’ll find out in a week’s time.” That was the agreement.

She giggles. “A whole week. I’m often told that I’m one of those people you meet and want to get to know straightaway.”

“I don’t doubt that.”

“And as you can see, I’m definitely a great selection. You wouldn’t be disappointed in the least.” She winks at me, reminding me of myself. Maybe Luc picked her because she seems to be the female version of me.

“I’m sure I wouldn’t be, but I’m sticking to a plan.” This is me being nice. No matter the reason or scenario, I don’t like anyone pressing or pushing information from me.

“Okay, I guess I’ll have to understand. But just so you know, I’d be exactly what you want me to be and make sure our home and our kids are looked after at all times.”

Kids?

No. Sorry, Celeste. There will be no kids.

Poor girl. She might have been in the run to becoming my wife until she said that.

Either she didn’t read the terms and conditions I sent her, or she wants kids with me and thought to slip that in. I have a feeling it’s the latter.

“I haven’t seen any mention of how many kids you want.” She gives me a challenging stare with a sassy smile, and I see I’m right.Again.

A girl like her would have read everything on that document, maybe several times. She’s a businesswoman. A good one who’s trying to be clever.

She wants more than a contract with me and obviously the security of being with a man who’s known for his net worth.

“There was no mention of kids.” My voice is flat and expressionless.

“Why not? Everyone loves kids.” She giggles again. This time, I find the sound irritating. “If we’re getting married, wouldn’t kids just naturally enter the picture?”

“Not really.”

“I’m sure I can change your mind.” Her voice rises slightly higher, displaying her self-assured confidence.

“I highly doubt that.” Very few people in my lifetime have managed to shift my mind once I’ve made a decision. I already know Celeste Wilder won’t be the next one.

“Just hear me out.” She flicks her head from side to side so her dark locks cover her shoulder like a cape. Then she flashes more boobage, as if her tits are the winning ticket to unlocking my cold, unyielding heart.

If I deposited a dollar for every woman who thought she could win me over with her tits, I could build my own country and sustain it for a lifetime.

The speech Celeste delivers next is award winning to say the least, and if I were some other guy, it might work. But I give her credit for trying. Trying to win me over to pick her to be my wife and trying to change my mind about having kids.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting kids.Ijust won’t be having them. That means I’ll do this poor girl a favor and cross her off the list.

While Celeste continues talking about herself and all the plans she has for the family she wants with me, curiosity pushes my thoughts right back to River.

I’m not the kind of guy who gets hung up on a woman, or has the desire to chase, but she was the exception to my rules. I think that’s why she’s still in my head.

Each time she floats into my mind—like now—I remember that she shouldn’t be there.

River and I are in the past. Things are different now, and I’m not the same guy she knew. Honestly, a guy like me should have never been anywhere near her in the first place.

She’s good. I’m bad.

She’s kind. I’m selfish.

She loves to laugh, and I’m a malicious recluse without a humorous bone in my body, unless I’m being crude and sardonic.

She was too good for me. Too pure, innocent, untainted. Until me.
