“Shhh,” I assure her. “Turn over.”

She obeys, flipping onto her back, and I take hold of her jeans and work them carefully the rest of the way down her legs before just as carefully laying back down on top of her.

“What’s the matter?” Concern furrows her forehead and clouds her eyes.

“Nothing,” I whisper, shaking my head. “I just want you a different way.

I definitely still want her, as my cock is still painfully hard and wet with her arousal as it brushes against her sex, but I want her gentle softness to dull the flames like no one but her can do.

Rolling to my back, I take her with me, gazing up at her sweet face hovering over mine. Taking hold of the hem of her clingy t-shirt, I raise it up her torso and she raises her arms, helping me to get it off of her before reaching behind her back to unclasp her bra.

Placing my palm over the tattoo I marked on her skin, I put my other hand on her hip and start guiding her to rock against me. I groan out in ecstasy as I look up at the pink flush that branches out across her skin, likely from the frenzy our bodies were tangled in moments ago. Her head drops back as she gets lost in the waves while her sex caresses my cock over and over in a warm embrace.

I can feel her walls closing in, her wetness getting tighter and tighter, and she suddenly opens her eyes and leans forward, her brown and purple hair providing a curtain on either side of my face. “What do you need?” she breathlessly asks down at me as I take her face between my hands.

“I want you to come for me,” I grunt up at her; the pleasure falling down over me like the gentle rain I was craving. “And then I need to hold you.” She concedes by pressing her lips to mine as her hips continue to roll and rock against mine in a steady, perfectly measured rhythm that takes me higher and higher up to the peak. Luna cries helplessly into my mouth as she comes with a thunder at the same time I find my release inside of her. My groans are dragged over gravel as they are pulled long and satisfyingly from my throat as I pump up into her, jets of my cum spurting out, taking the last of my anger with them.

The flames are now a pile of charred embers, flaking apart into ash when I pull Luna down on top of me and hold her body tightly against mine. Her weight on my chest dulls the ache and any last repercussions of my earlier rage. Just like the gentle rain doesn’t get mad at the fire for burning, it just simply soothes it into waning down.

With no words, Luna turns her head to the side, resting her face on my chest as we breathe together, each breath longer and slower than the last. I peer down to see her dark lashes fanned over her cheekbones, and her features completely relaxed as she drifts off to sleep.

Resting my own head back against the pillow, I reach over to grab the nearby blanket and drape it over the two of us. And then, never feeling more secure and protected from my demons, I join her in our blissful bubble of sleep.

LUNA

My cheek is pressed against Kaleb’s chest, trying to take in one last whiff of his musky scent through his fatigues. So much has happened in the three weeks since we found each other again, and yet not nearly enough. His warm breath in the top of my hair sends a delightful shiver down my spine.

“It’s just a year, my girl,” Kaleb reminds me. “It will go by before you know it.”

“I know,” I murmur, still not letting go of his waist. With his arms locked around me, I chance opening my eyes to see all the other soldiers with multiple family members crowding them before they get on the bus. All Kaleb has is me. If we hadn’t run into each other in that club, he’d be going off to fight in a war with no one to see him off; to tell him to be safe and take care of himself, or tell him they can’t wait for him to come home. He’ll have Alex with him of course, but I’m happy to give him something that reminds him he’s got someone to stay alive for. I’ll forever be thankful for that night we reconnected, because married or not, I’d be right here seeing him off; being his person.

When the last call is announced for Kaleb’s platoon to board the bus that will take them to the airfield, I reach into the pocket of my hoodie and pull out the clear plastic baggy I brought for him. He takes it from me and looks at it curiously for a minute before his green eyes light up with the realization of what it is.

“Oh my God, are you serious?” He cracks open the Ziploc and takes out the small, curled strand of braided purple hair.

“Too creepy?” I raise an eyebrow, my eyes squinting against the afternoon sun.

“So creepy,” he chuckles shaking his head. “But I couldn’t ask for a better memento. I love it,” he tells me tenderly, placing a small kiss on my lips as he tucks it into one of the button pockets of his uniform as I reach in my pocket again, this time producing a pen.

“My turn for a present,” I inform him, and he takes the pen, giving me a cheeky smile that reminds me of us being kids again.

“I’ll never get tired of this,” he grins, taking hold of my left hand. It’s always the left, which I think was a fluke the first time, but after that, we both realized that the picture would stay on my palm longer if it’s on my less dominant hand.

The ball point tickles as always, in the most calming way. Watching Kaleb draw has the same effect as letting a summer breeze settle over me. I feel peace, wonder… serenity. When he finishes, he closes my hand.

“No peeking until I leave,” he says softly, and out of nowhere, I feel the prickle behind my eyes forcing tears to the front, and I blink hard against them.

“Then don’t leave,” I barely choke out as I bring my unmarked hand to wipe at the emotion streaming down my cheek.

“Lu,” Kaleb’s voice is husky as he reaches for me, pulling me to him, threading a hand in my hair as if he’s protecting me from our reality. “I’m coming back, you know that. But I tell you what, it’s some kind of incredible having something make it so damn hard to leave.”

“What if something happens to you?” I sniff. “Now that you’re back in my life, I don’t want to live without–”

“You won’t,” he cuts me off gently, taking my face in his hands. “And neither will I. But, baby, you’ve always been the strong one, and I know you can be strong now. Please do that for me.”

Pulling in a breath and releasing it, I finally nod, though my heart sits in agony in my chest. But my concession brings a small smile to Kaleb’s face, and I take that as my microscopic consolation.
