I’m sorry I’m rambling, but I needed to get all my thoughts onto paper, to let you know exactly how I feel. Hopefully, I will see you soon, because life wouldn’t be worth living if I can’t.

Just remember, whatever happens, I will always love you and what could have been between us.

Yours forever,

Your Handsome Lover

Daniel xx

I placed the pen on top of the notebook, got up from my chair, and lay down on my bed. With tears pouring down my face and onto the pillow, the pain was finally too much and pulled me into the darkness of sleep.

Chapter Thirty-One

Kye

Ihad not long arrived in Manchester to meet up with my contact, Zane. It had been years since I had last seen him, but he was one of the only people I still trusted with my life. He had been there for me countless times, watching my back when I was in the business, and even out of it, I still knew I could count on him when the time came, as he had proven when we were looking for Kelsey a couple of years ago.

I had often tried to get him to come over and work with us, but he liked his lifestyle too much. Jetting around the globe, doing whatever job he was needed for. He wasn’t an assassin like me, more of a computer hacker. But he could look after himself if he needed to and knew his way around a gun, nevertheless. I drove into the hotel car park where we had both rented a room, just outside of the city. We had chosen this position because it gave us good access to the motorway for a quick getaway should we need it, not that we would. However, I guessed old habits die hard for both of us.

I walked into the lobby, got the key to my room, and headed upstairs. I placed my bags down and got out my phone, sending Zane a quick message.

In the hotel, room number 235. Pop up when you’re ready. I have a bottle of bourbon here.

I hardly drank now, not like I had before I finally got my shit together with Abigail. Now I was more of a social drinker, and not the nightly occurrence to drown my sorrows and get some relief from the nightmares that had once plagued me. I poured out too small glasses and placed them on the table in the corner of the room. It was only a few minutes before there was a knock at my door. I got up from the chair and walked over to the door, quickly checking that it was Zane standing there.

I opened the door and saw a man who, like me, had aged slightly. However, he was still the Zane that I knew and had looked up to all my life. He was around ten years older than me, and had been the one to get me into the line of work I was originally in. Some may have said that he was a bad influence, but to me, he had saved my life. Given me a reason to live when I’d thought there was none.

He walked through the door and instantly engulfed me in a hug. “It’s been a long time, my old friend.”

He released his hold and held out his hand. He had always been like an older brother to me after I had left home, always looking out for me and trying to help me with my issues. But now that I had a wife and two children, we hardly spoke anymore.

“It has. My life has changed so much since I last saw you.”

“So I have heard. Come on, let’s sit for a while and you can fill me in before we get down to business.”

We moved to the corner of the room and sat down to chat. I went through everything that had happened since we had last spoken when we were trying to find and rescue Kelsey. How I had found the love of my life and nearly lost her through my own stupidity and mental health. How we had reconciled, had twins, and since gotten married.

I was happy in my life now. I had sought the help I needed and been welcomed back into my family with open arms. Don’t get me wrong, I still had bad days, but I had learned to live with them, which was why this current situation was important to me. I wanted Richard to finally have the happiness he deserved.

But I knew I had to be careful. This was the first time since joining King Brothers that I had done something like this. I knew I had to be careful that I didn’t go too deep into the dark place I had been in during those years after I left home. I finished telling Zane everything, and he sat there in silence for a moment. He placed his hand over mine before he spoke.

“I never realised things had gotten so bad, Kye. Why didn’t you tell me? I would have helped you long ago.”

I gave him a sad smile. “I had to help myself. No one could have helped me until I was about to lose Bonita. Anyway, this isn’t about me. This is about Richard and Daniel. What have you found out?”

He hesitated a moment before he removed his hand and continued.

“Well, the man I am sure was involved is called Ryan Francis. He is a low-grade hacker who went to university with Kevin Wright. I have been tracking his accounts, and a considerable amount of money has been credited to his account recently. I have set up a meeting with him tomorrow at two o’clock at a hotel near Old Trafford. I guess he is hoping that the crowds of match day will keep him hidden. He knows there are two of us coming to see him, and he thinks we need some computer hacking done.” Zane paused for a moment before he continued. “I also have the real footage from the car accident. It was never Daniel’s car, and I have a clear picture of the driver. I’ll bet you a thousand pounds that it was Ryan driving.”

It was a tempting bet, but I was guessing that Zane already knew exactly who was driving the vehicle, and therefore, I would have been wasting my money. However, with the fact that we weren’t meeting Ryan until tomorrow afternoon, which just left this evening, I decided to make a suggestion.

“So, I guess it’s dinner on me tonight, then. Shall we order room service, and then you can show me the footage of the accident? Then we can have a good catch-up.”

I knew Zane wouldn’t want to be seen around town much. If I was honest, neither did I. Both of us had far too many enemies to give them a chance to find us, so I thought suggesting staying here in the room would be the best bet. I had booked under my real name so they wouldn’t be able to trace me as Kye, and I suspected Zane had done the same. Neither of us knew each other’s real names, and that was the way we liked to keep it.

He gave me a smile. “That sounds like a mighty fine idea.”

It was just before two o’clock on Saturday afternoon, and Zane and I were just walking into the lobby of the hotel where we were due to meet Ryan. I was guessing that he wasn’t actually staying here but using it as base. I knew I would have if I had been him. Zane had shown me the driver of the vehicle that caused Kevin’s accident, so we had a good idea who we were looking for.
