“Do not come after me. You will be killed and I couldn’t survive that.”

“Vi—”

“¡Porfa,Vicente!”I snap, my mind already playing out exactly how he’d be murdered for trying to get me back.

“I promise, Vi, but please come back to me. I need my big sister here.”

I sob my promise to him, telling him I need to go but will try to call him soon.

“I love you,hermana.”

“I love you too,hermano. Siempre.”

The call drops and I let the phone fall onto Alvaro’s seat before covering my face with my hands and sobbing into them. I wish I could hug my brother right now, hold him and let him know I’m okay and I’ll never leave him. But I can’t. I shouldn’t have made him a promise at all.

I feel the air move as my door opens and rough hands wrap around my wrists.

“Bruja.” His thumbs rub circles over my skin. “¿Qué pasa?I thought you’d be happy to speak to Vicente.”

I move my hands and scrub my face, taking a deep breath before replying. “I am. I just—I miss him so much. We’ve never been separated before.”

He lifts me out of the car, taking my hand in his as he leads me toward the beach. “I had that kind of bond with my mother.”

I’m surprised to hear him mention her.

“I’m sorry she passed away,” I tell him, squeezing his hand. “I can’t imagine losing my mom.”

We walk along the white sand but my heels dig in with each step, making my steps falter annoyingly. With a huff, I stop and lift one leg to pull off my heel but almost fall on my ass in the process.

Alvaro catches me by the waist with a grin at my struggle.

“Let me.”

He turns and squats in front of me, placing my hand on his shoulder before holding my calf in one hand and sliding his fingers down to my ankle, deftly undoing the strap of my heel. When he stands with both of them hooked in his fingers, he looks up at me and I lose myself a little in his green eyes. With the sun on his face, his eyes look almost silver, the colors seem to dance as his gazes at me.

“Actually, I think youcanimagine it, and that’s my fault.” He stands and tucks my hair behind my ear. “I’m sorry I almost took your brother from you.”

I don’t tell him it’s okay because it will never be okay, but I can tell he’s sincere and that apologizing is not something he often does, so I dip my head and take his hand in mine once more. That’s as far as my forgiveness can afford to go for now.

We walk for a while, making small talk as we come to a shaded area where we both sit in the sand and watch people swim and splash in the waters. We’re in the shade of one of the many umbrellas that line the beach. It’s busy here but with everyone in their own little worlds, no one seems to even notice us in our clothes that are not fit for the beach.

A young man wearing a white polo shirt with a resort’s name stitched into the right breast pocket and plain khaki shorts approaches us, speaking in accented English.

“Hello, may I get you both something to drink?”

I look at Alvaro who nods to me to order what I want. Since I wasn’t offered a menu and I don’t know what kind of drinks they have here, I go with a water.

“Are you sure? You can get some wine, I know you like that.”

I grimace, thinking of how I puked wine in the Corvette and stick my tongue out at the jerkoff before turning back to the waiter.

“I’ll have a Modelo with lime, please.”

Alvaro chuckles. “Make that two and a bottle of water as well.”

When the waiter leaves us, I turn back to the beach, tucking my legs beneath me, leaning on my hand as I watch an intense volleyball game. I’ve never been good at that game, but it’s such an entertaining sport to watch.

I chuckle when a furry German Shepherd runs full speed through the players with a frisbee in his mouth. Thankfully, no one gets upset by it, even when he drops the saucer and chases the volleyball.
