“The pleasure is mine.” Her voice is smooth, an airy breath as she watches me.

Lupita brings a plate to me, but I don’t pay attention to what I’m eating; all I can think of is Alvaro’s betrayal, how stupid I was, how silly and naive I allowed myself to be.

The room begins to chatter around me. Marío seems determined to charm the woman promised to the man I gave myself to. The man who begged me to accept my fate with him. The bastard who used me and lied to me. I bet he had a good laugh behind my back after he left me last night, naked and still dripping with his cum.

I can feel his eyes on me, but I ignore him, giving a polite smile to Marío. I try to pretend that I’m unaffected, keeping my eyes on his father while he speaks as though he’s the most interesting person I’ve ever met. Once in a while, Marío glances at me and gives me a wink that makes me want to stab my fork through his skull.

Still, I return his smile each time.

Though his words are drowned out with the rush of blood in my ears, I still laugh at the correct times, but inside I'm burning as though my heart has become an open flame. The open, green fields I once yearned for turn black in my mind, the sun no longer offering its ethereal glow.

I feel a tap on my leg underneath the table that makes me jolt in my seat. Marío looks down at me as the sounds of the room return to normal.

“Are you okay, dear?” he asks as though he actually cares.

“Yes, I’m just not feeling well this morning.” I stand, the men following suit, but I focus on Marío. “If you’ll excuse me, I think I need to lay down for a moment.”

I don’t wait for his reply, I just nod my head to the woman. “Fue un placer conocerte,Katalina.”

A thought occurs to me…it’s apettythought, but the flames of anger in my body push me to do it anyway. I stand on my toes and place a light kiss on Marío’s cheek before turning, my eyes bypassing Alvaro even though I can feel the rolling waves of rage coming off him.

Fuck him and fuck his lies.

I hope he rots in his misery.

ALVARO

“Kill This Love” Józefina

My father stares at me as I watch Vicenta leave the dining room, my jaw grinding at the kiss she gave to him. A kiss that belongs tome. I look back at him, not giving two fucks that both he and thisputabeside me notice.

I open my mouth to curse him, to pull my gun and blow that kiss right off his unworthy face, but I turn and walk away instead.

“Alvaro!” my father barks, making me turn on my heel as I reach the door. “What do you think you’re doing?”

My smile is cold as my eyes slide down to Katalina who sits stiff and nervous. “If you want a marriage between the familias, I suggest you do it yourself because I will not marry this illegitimate Herrera whore.”

She stands, her face indignant as she begins to stomp toward me, but my father stops her.

“Forgive my son, Katalina. He is still reeling at the loss of his mother. Seeing my fiancé kiss me has no doubt brought this disrespectful attitude out of him.”

I scoff and shake my head before pushing through the door to the backyard. As I reach the garage, I take my phone out while sliding into the car and dial Vicenta’s number, but get sent straight to voicemail. I call three more times, slamming my hand to the wheel when I’m ignored.

The sound of a bike starting has my head snapping up, my eyes landing on Vicenta who sits on my red Ducati. I open my door, ready to rip her off and remind her of who the fuck she belongs to.

“You lying bastard,” she says with a shaky voice. “I’ll never be yours.”

She throws her phone at me, making me jerk to the side so it doesn’t hit me. With that distraction, she revs the engine before peeling out of the garage, tears streaming down her face.

“Bruja!”I quickly drop into the car and start it, chasing my angry girl.

I watch her ride through the turns of the long drive, until she presses the button for the wrought iron gate while still on her bike, allowing her to exit without stopping.

“Fuck!” I speed past the gate, watching her switch gears and speed through the streets of Acapulco, her hair blowing out behind her the same way it did the night she ran from the restaurant in Texas.

My phone rings and I look down to see it’s my father. I hit the answer button as I fly through an intersection.
