She scoffs and looks at me with disdain, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

I make a humming sound and start to walk away from her, not needing to give her any more of my time. If that’s how she treats me, Declan won’t be keeping her around much longer. Why waste my time or effort?

“Hey,” she shouts, “you can’t just walk back there.”

I freeze and turn toward her slowly. “I can and I will. You might as well pack up your belongings now. You’ll be done here before I leave the building.”

I almost pat myself on the back because where did this version of me come from? Declan, and the power he says I always have, must be rubbing off on me. I don’t get to flex it very often, but this has given me a thrill. We could have coexisted if she did her job with professionalism.

“Who the hell do you think you are?” Her voice reaches a level that reminds me of dogs yipping and I grimace. “I’m invaluable to Mr. McCarthy’s business.”

I barely stop myself from laughing at the haughty look on her face. It’s totally not warranted.

“It’s a shame that we couldn’t get along. I don’t like to throw around who I am, not like some of the men who come through here. If you had been the professional that you were hired to be, we wouldn’t be here right now.” I shake my head condescendingly and hold up my left hand while wiggling my fingers. “I’m Declan’s wife.”

Her face goes pale, and I flash her another sweet smile as I turn toward my husband’s office. I can hear her sputtering behind me like a sprinkler that’s gotten stuck in place. I’ll just hate to see her go.

I don’t bother knocking when I get to his door. He would hate it if I did and probably spank me over his desk to remind me that I don’t wait. Not for him or anyone else. He’s been teaching me these lessons for months and I’ve always been quite the student.

Declan’s eyes snap to mine from the other side of his desk and a slow smile spreads across his face as his eyes roam over my body. I was feeling damn good today after the news I got and decided to do better than the leggings and oversized shirt I usually wear since I spend most of my time in my office at home expanding my own business.

I sit down on the couch after giving Declan a dazzling smile and a nod at Ronan who is clearly in a meeting with my husband. I’m not here to interrupt, but I knew if I didn’t come in almost right away then my man would not be happy with me. Some news is better delivered in person, after all.

“Out,” Declan growls, but Ronan isn’t put off by the caveman who has come out to play.

Ronan stands, amusement dancing in his eyes as he bows in my direction. “Roisin, always a pleasure.”

“Good to see you, Ronan,” I chirp which causes my husband to stand up so quickly that his chair slams back against the wall.

When the door clicks behind Ronan, my husband starts stalking in my direction. It has me wet and ready in seconds. But, then again, it’s always like that with him.

“The new receptionist was rude instead of professional like she should have been. We could have played nice, but she couldn’t do it,” I inform him, my tone neutral. “I already told her she should start packing her stuff.”

Declan’s laugh booms throughout the room and then I’m up and in his arms before he flops back onto the couch and drapes me over his lap. His large hands are everywhere, ramping up my need for him. It almost makes me forget why I’m here in the first place.

Almost.

“I’ll have Conor take care of it,” his voice is a husky purr that goes straight to my clit. “But I have a feeling that’s not why you’re here.”

I smile at the man who owns my heart and cup his strong jaw in my hands. My fingertips graze over his beard and I soak up the moment. One which teeters on the edge of everything changing.

“I know why I haven’t been feeling well,” my voice is soft, and his eyes go from concerned to eager as fuck. I think he knows what I’m going to say, but he still needs the words. “I’m pregnant.”

Declan’s kiss is hot, primal, and filled with satisfaction. There’s something else on his tongue as well—gratefulness.

Everything could have crumbled around me when I was put in his path. I could have lost myself, my life, my future. Instead, we rose from the rubble of my walls and my past. Together.
