“You know, now you look like this.”Damn it.I could have handled that better, but flirting has never been my strong suit.

She glares her gorgeous green eyes in my direction, “Mmhmm,” she sounds behind pressed lips.

“Abby, what happened?” Better to rip off this bandage now rather than later.

She takes a deep breath and hesitates before saying, “My mom got engaged to her boyfriend. He wanted her to move in with him right away, and before I knew it, there were movers in my bedroom boxing things up, and we were gone.”

“In all those years, you never bothered to look us up, try to contact us? I thought we were close?” I ask, pulling into her driveway. I used to ride by this house all the time as a kid, hoping she would come out. No one has rented it since she left; it has just sat there empty. Kind of like mine and Parker's hearts after she left. I know Parker was in love with her first, but I loved her too. She was ours, but she was also mine.

“I was a kid, and when I got old enough, I figured you all forgot about me. I don’t like social media, and I hate even having a phone, not like I even had your phone number to call.”

“But you’re back now? For good?” I need to know before I let my emotions get the best of me.

She glances at her house and then drops her chin to her chest. “Yeah, Ryan. I’m back. Not going anywhere anytime soon.”

I want to know why. Why is she here? Why now? But she opens the door and gets out of the truck, closing it behind her, and I’m losing my window of opportunity.

“Look, I’m sorry for whatever it was that I did that has Parker hating me, but I was a kid. I had no idea my mom would move us and I would never see you two after that. But I’m back. I would like us all to be friends again, but if that's not possible, I understand.” She looks up at me with those green eyes, and something is happening to my body to where I’m jumping out of the truck and rushing over to her side.

I grab her and wrap her in my arms. She just stands there, her arms down at her sides, as if she’s in shock that I would do such a thing, but I only squeeze her tighter. I feel her body pressed up against me. The dips and curves that she hides under her loose clothing have me tingling in my pants.

“I’m sorry. You’re right. We were all just kids. I’m glad you’re back, and I’m ready to pick up where we left off,” I say as I place my chin on top of her head. She finally lifts her arms, and right as I think she will wrap them around me and hug me back, she uses them to push me away.

“If that’s you asking me to be your girlfriend again, Mr. Pick-up-back-where-we-left-off, you got another thing coming,” she laughs. “Thanks for the ride. See you at school tomorrow.”

Iwaitedaroundthecorner of her street for her to get home, and when I saw her getting out of a guy's truck and him hugging her, the rage inside of me exploded. Who does he think he is? Who gave him permission to touch her? When she pushed him away, the anger subsided a bit, knowing that his advances would not work on her. But still, no one touches her. He will pay for that.

Idon’tgohomeimmediately after school. There’s an old drag strip on the edge of town calling my name. Of all days for Coach to go easy on us at practice, today was not the day I needed it.

She is here. She sat two feet away from me and acted like nothing was fucking wrong. Nope, she disappears for eight fucking years and thinks she can just come back and be welcomed back with open arms? Fuck her, and fuck Colin for being thegoodguy.

I drive my car to the faded starting line on the track. The engine roars as I feather the gas pedal. I count myself down.

Five.

Her auburn hair.

Four.

Those fucking delicious curves.

Three.

Her luscious lips.

Two.

Her intoxicating green eyes.

One.
