“Let me talk to Sara about it. Can you email me all the details?”

“Yes, of course. I’ll send you the official invite. We’d love to have you there. And it’s always a good night.”

“Great, we appreciate you thinking of us.”

“Willow, you’re our priority right now. Please don’t doubt how much we want to work with you.”

“Ah, okay. Thank you.”

I hang up with a furrowed brow and mindlessly check the message I received earlier while gathering my thoughts. None of this makes any sense. If we’re a priority, why did it take a week to return my call? We’re a small-town store, not some up-and-coming designers. Why us?

Unknown: Don’t go anywhere. I’m coming to visit. We need to talk.

I ignore the obvious wrong number as Jesse’s face comes to mind and my chest burns. If I find out he's behind the Raven’s stuff, I am kicking his ass. Literally. With a stiletto heel. That is not cool.

But why would he do it? He may not have known me for long, but he knows me well enough to realize it’s not a good idea. Something deep down tells me this isn’t him.

So, if this boutique offer is real, could it be my ticket to another life?

Chapter Twenty-Three

Willow

“Ihatethatyou’renot here,” I whine to Sara as she laughs. “What if they convince me to sign something without you?”

“They’re not going to make you signanything. We haven’t even had a proper conversation with them. Plus, you’ve got Pippa.”

Ugh. “I know. She’s very excited. Apparently, this brand just designedthedress of the season. Whatever that means.”

“I’m still trying to figure out why a clothing brand that sells no jewelry is suddenly looking to buy yours,” Sara questions, her tone a little quieter than before, as though she’s talking to herself. “I don’t mean that in a bad way, but—”

“You and I both, Sara,” I cut her off. “Maybe I can find that out tonight. Or maybe I’ll get Pippa to do it. She’ll know what to say.”

“Ooh yes!” she squeals in excitement. “Do that, then report back in the morning. I’m so jealous.”

“No, you’re not.”

Sara laughs. “Okay, I’m jealous of the luxury accommodation and a night in Los Angeles. Not the event itself.”

Los Angeles.I’m in Los Angeles. “I can’t believe I’ve now been to two new cities in the space of a month. Who am I?”

“You’re Willow Sanders, and you’re amazing. Don’t ever forget that.”

My heart clenches as emotion clogs my throat. Time to end this conversation. I can’t let myself get emotional tonight. “Thank you. I better go. Pippa has a bunch of dresses for me to try on.”

“A bunch?”

“I wish that was an exaggeration.”

“Have fun.” Sara laughs again as I groan before hanging up the phone. What am I doing?

A few hours later, Pippa slows as we near a multistory parking garage, glancing my way. “How are you doing? Do you need a pep talk?”

“No, I’ll be fine. I’ll just picture everyone in the room naked. That’s what I’m supposed to do, right?”

Pippa laughs at my expense. “Yeah, if you’re doing a speech. I’m not sure it’s necessary if you’re just a guest at a party.”

“A party? Kim said it was adinner.”
