He stifled a groan, swallowing it back. “You didn’t answer my question.”

“I can’t tell you what it will do. I told you, none of this showed up in my research. I had no idea this would happen. Your kind should know better than me.” At least I would think so, but maybe the result was different than what two wolves experienced.

“We can’t be the only ones, can we?” He searched my face like it had just occurred to him.

I brought my lips to his. “Do your people not speak of these things?”

“I don’t think we’ve had any soul ties since I took over.” He searched his memory, and with it came waves of pain. “So I don’t know.”

Images he’d never shared with me came in waves, flashes, and pictures. Men with cattle prods. Snarls and blood. Dominic in full blood lust and rage. His eyes widened and flashed to mine, and the connection cut off. Strangled, choked, and pulled the oxygen from my lungs.

Drowning on dry land.

His hand found my throat, but there was no pressure there. He eased off on the flow, and only feelings remained. No pictures, but it was enough. I knew they were all true. Everything I’d seen. The whispers and rumors about how this started.

He never spoke about his childhood or being used by humans before he came into his power. Why he was the type of fighter he was. My chest ached.

“You’ve never talked about it.” I put my hand on his wrist.

“No.”

“You killed them all?” I asked, already knowing the answer.

“Yes.”

I nodded. “And you think your people will forget?”

“They have short memories of saviors. How easily good deeds are forgotten.”

“You freed them from their captivity, and they’d kill you because of me?” I asked, more astonished than I should be.

“Only time will tell what my people are capable of.” He released his hold on my throat, trying to resettle, but he was uncomfortable. “This feels like the end or a beginning, but not the one we were expecting to come away with tonight.”

“I don’t think either of us could have predicted where this night would lead.” I rolled to my back, taking him with me. I had two new directions after tonight. The first would be to protect Dominic from the people he was protecting. The second would be to figure out more about his and my connection, who was using wolf blood and for what, and if the two things were connected like my intuition told me they were.

“You can’t protect me,” Dominic whispered, settling between my thighs. He rocked, and I moved with him, slowly finding our way back to the connection and the way our bodies were joined.

It brought a new sense of calm and comfort. Security in one another.

“I can try.” I would. I might not know what he was capable of, even after those flashes of memory, but he had no idea what I was capable of either. We both had our secrets.

“Vin, it’s not your responsibility.” He pushed my knees farther apart, and if he hadn’t been inside me, I would have never known by his tone he was halfway to coming again.

I opened my knees, further welcoming him against me. I wanted us both to feel like barriers were removed. “I’d like to argue that given our connection and what losing it now would do to me, it is very much my responsibility.”

He growled and bit my pec, but he didn’t argue.

“Do you have more duties to perform tonight?” I asked, grabbing his ass, not sure what our next move would be or how soon he’d have to leave me. Suddenly, I was more thankful for the knot and its ability to keep him in my arms.

“You, my mate.” His hot breath fanned over my neck, but his words warmed me from the inside out. “This is what’s important tonight.”

We stayed like that for a long time, wrapped in one another, tuning the rest of the world out. But the dawn doesn’t stop for anyone.

“Do you feast today?” I asked as we watched light crest the horizon.

“Yes, and give thanks for the next generation conceived tonight.” He paused and took a slow breath. “We have to decide what to do next,” he said softly.

I smiled to myself, liking the way he said ‘we’ more than I expected to like it. “What do you mean?”
