‘I lo—’

‘No.’ His fingers brushed over her lips. ‘Before you say words I might be too selfish to allow you to take back, you need to be sure, duci. Once I grab hold of a thing, I tend not to let it go. I might get obsessive. I might rage and burn a few worlds down for it. You saw how I was with my vow to my mother. I hesitated and almost sacrificed someone you love.’

The last words were dredged from a harrowing place she knew anguished him now.

‘Do you regret it?’ she asked.

His face twisted. ‘Every second since, tesoro. I’ll regret for the rest of my miserable life.’

‘Doesn’t that tell you anything, Alessio? Because it tells me that you know where you went wrong. That it was a single-second mistake instead of a decision you acted on even though you knew it would hurt me. And don’t forget, you still got her back. Life is a complicated puzzle we work through every day. You can’t close yourself to love because of a mistake you made. And even if you do, I’ll still forgive you for it.’

He swallowed, his chest heaving in a deep breath. ‘I still think—’

‘Mention that you’re not worthy of me one more time and I’ll walk out of here.’

His eyes flared again. Then started to lighten, the flames leaping higher. ‘I love you, Giada. With every undeserving bone in my body, I swear I will earn your love. I will never make you feel unsure of my devotion. Bless me with your heart and I will make you a vow to treasure it as long as I live.’ The smallest hint of a wicked smile twitched his lips. ‘And I think by now you know how I am with vows.’

Tears filled her eyes again and shefinallylet hope soar. ‘I do. And yes. To all of it. We will love each other and embrace the fear. And when our children are born, we will show them that love like that is worth it, a hundred times over.’

His throat moved again and he shook his head. ‘I didn’t believe in fate or luck. But I’m almost thankful that your sister stole from me. That I drove that day to find you. That I’m soblessedto have you, Dr Parker,’ he finished gruffly.

‘Can I tell you I love you now?’

‘Se, per favore,’he whispered urgently.

She leaned up and brushed her lips over his, then pulled back before he could take over and capture hers.‘Ti amo tanto, Alessio.’

He swooped down and took her mouth then, every last emotion saturating their kiss until Giada was drowning in it and welcomed more.

‘Chista è da me,’he breathed against her lips when they came up for air.

‘Yes. I’m yours. Now and always. Now take me home, Alessio. We have a new year to welcome.’

‘A new yearandthe rest of our lives,’ he amended.

As she’d suspected he would.

And that was the only way she wanted it.
