“What are you going to tell Mom and Dad?” she asks as she stands and follows me to the door.

“I’ll tell them I’m dating Harrison. You know we can’t tell them anything else.”Just like I can never tell her about Eian. It’s the first secret I’ll ever keep from her, and it stings, but it’s also the only way to go about it.

“I do.”

We walk the four blocks to our parents’ apartment and greet them with kisses and hugs as soon as we get in—we don’t even wait to take off our coats, we’re huggers in this family.

“He’s got a good reputation with the construction guys,” Dad says after I tell them about Harrison. “Some of them have worked on projects for him, and they always say he’s a good man.” He nods as if the word of his colleagues is all he needs. “Always polite and greeting everyone when he visits the sites. Not entitled.” Which we all know is rare in the upper class of the city.

“Yeah, he’s pretty nice,” Zoe adds.

“When will we meet him? You could bring him for Christmas,” Mom says, hope filling her eyes and I almost choke on my sip of coke.

“We haven’t talked about the holidays, and he also has children, so I don’t know if they’d want to come.”

“But you’ve met them? His children?”

“Yes. Very normal.” I shrug.

“Well they’re invited for Christmas dinner either way, all of them, so pass the invitation along if you want.”

“Sure,” I say, but I have no idea how I’d even begin to approach that situation.

Sunday, December 20th

“Are you sure you don’t want me there? Or Zoe?” I pace in front of my building. I came down a few minutes ago because Harrison texted saying he was five minutes away and I don’t want to interrupt this call to see his text letting me know he’s here.

“I’m positive, Derek and I have Wolf’s back,” Hawk tells me even though my question was clearly for his brother.

“I’ve got Birdie here, and Deedee as well, so I’m as supported as I can be,” Wolf adds calling Hawk and their best friend Derek by the nicknames he has for them.

“Yeah, I know but—”

“You know we’ll call if anything happens, but no one’s found out anything since last month, no one knows where I am.” Wolf’s reminder of our discussion makes me wince.

The black SUV parks in front of me and I wave Matt away and open the door myself, get in, and close it in less than three seconds.

I signal to Harrison that I need one minute with my finger, and he kisses it. “I know you didn’t want to hide it—”

“But you were right to push, Tristan. Don’t worry so much, I’m not mad.”

The smile I hear in his voice does calm me down. It’s the first time I’ve been able to talk to him since I saw him in LA a month ago, so knowing he’s not mad at me anymore is a big relief.

“Okay, good. Please keep me posted, Hawk.”

“I will,” he assures me. “But now you gotta tell us, did you really get yourself a sugar daddy, Tristan?”

“Ugh,” I grumble, praying Harrison didn’t hear him. “That’s not what this is, and you know it.”

“Yeah, we do,” Wolf speaks now. “But we’re gonna give you endless shit for ending up with that delicious silver fox.” I hear the leer and a growl escapes me. They cackle like hyenas at me.

“Well, I see you feel perfectly fine already and don’t need me at all. Bye guys.”

“Welooooveeeyou,” they sing-song making me smile. They’re such goofballs.

“Love you too, be good,” I say and hang up. I turn to greet Harrison but he’s kissing me before I can make out the first word. Not complaining.

“I missed you,” he whispers on my lips.
