We kissed on the lips. I slid my arms around his shoulders and held him against me. He felt wonderful there, like he belonged.

“I can’t wait to have brushed teeth tomorrow,” he whispered. “So romantic.”

“Ha! Yes, I agree,” I said. Desire cruised through me, and it was shocking, an unfamiliar but welcome guest. Clean breath might be dangerous. “I’d better get out of here,” I said, confused, but he got it right away and chuckled, pulling me closer.

“We’re two adults. We have control over this.”

I wasn’t so sure. “If you say so. Until tomorrow, then.”

I got into the car, conscious that he was staring at my legs again. I pulled my sweatshirt over my knees, wagging my finger at him.

“Sir, I beg your pardon!”

“Can’t blame a guy for trying,” he said, waggling his eyebrows.

I leaned forward to start my car, feeling silly, and he took a step back.

“Text me when you get home. Not that I’m trying to be daddy…”

“Okay, I will.”

I waved and winked, making him laugh again, and pulled out of his driveway. After turning the corner, I stopped the car and got out my phone to read his text.

I really like you.

I put my phone away and drove off, my heart thumping in my chest yet again. I had only been with the guy for an evening, and this would be the third spell of tachycardia. I had left his house after midnight, using every ounce of self-control I could muster to leave. I was ready to stay there forever.

I guessed he was going to have that effect on me.

The house was lit up. Ugh, there would be questions to answer. My roomies were home from work, waiting for me. Only Dale knew I had spent the evening with thevictim, the word they used to refer to Flynn.

I had to laugh when I pulled into the driveway and they hurried to the door, flicking the porch light on.

“What? No reporters or satellite trucks? That sure passed over quickly,” I said, locking my car.

“There was a wreck on 75,” Brian said. “We’re not answering the phone. The hospital will be looking for more staff, and we need some sleep.”

“Where’s Dale?” I asked, looking into the house.

“She went in to help out. I’m exhausted,” Casey said. “How do you feel? She said you had coffee with the victim.”

“I was with him until about twenty minutes ago. He’s doing great. No ill effects.”

“How in the hell did that come about?” Brian asked. “Dale told us about the flowers…”

“I should have asked her not to,” I said, annoyed. “I wanted to keep it private for a few moments. I appreciate all you two did for me. I swear to you. But there’s something about this whole thing that is special. Not special exactly. I can never find the right words.”

“Sit. We brought burritos from Figgie’s truck.”

“No way.” I was still full of pizza, but a burrito from Figgie’s was not to be passed up. “I’ll eat again.”

“So, tell us everything. Don’t leave out a thing. I’ll know,” Brian said, pointing two fingers at his eyes and then pointing them at me, making me bark out a laugh.

“I went to George and Lillian’s and then found out my grandfather was headed over, so I had to leave.”

“Oh, Bella,” Casey started.

“I know.”
