“Me either,” Brian said. “I’m a little in awe, actually. I might be a little jealous.”

“Why?” I asked, frowning.

“Because you saved his life, and now he’s into you.”

“Aw, Brian, you’re so full of shit,” Casey said, making us laugh. “Anyway, I’m pretty sure he’s straight.”

“Yeah, I’m sure,” he said, crestfallen. “Anyway, show us the flowers.”

I led the way into my room, and theyoohedandaahedover the gorgeous bouquet.

“It’s like he knew what you liked,” Casey said, fingering a petal. “Did the family confess?”

“No, but Skippy might have said something.”

“Or the florist?” Brian asked.

“No one has ever sent me flowers before, so how would they know?” I asked, gazing at the arrangement. “All I know is that they are the most beautiful flowers I’ve been given.”

“The only,” Brian reminded me. “Let me take a picture of you alongside, and you can send it to Flynn Safadi.”

I didn’t object for a change, and he snapped a photo and sent it to my phone. Then I remembered I had said I’d text Flynn when I got home. I copied the photo and sent it to him. As far as responding to his text sayingI really like you, all I said in return was,It’s intense!

In seconds, I got a return text.Thank you for letting me know you’re home. I guess your roomies must be there since that pic isn’t a selfie. He added a laughing emoji.Looking forward to tomorrow.

I let him have the last word. The whole situation seemed unreal, especially after I’d left his house. I was in a fog. I wasn’t eager to get my heart broken. But that wasn’t the right word. I didn’t want to stir the pot, so to speak, to upset my emotional balance that I had spent so much energy perfecting. I wasn’t really interested in having a relationship, despite the powerful physical attraction his body stimulated.

“What’s wrong?”

I looked up at Brian, who was studying me, concern written all over his face.

I shook my head. “Why am I doing this?”

“What? Showing interest in a great guy who owes you? Because you deserve it, Bella.”

“Is it too late to open a bottle of wine?” I asked.

“Not if you have nothing to do tomorrow,” Casey said. “And it sounds like you have a date that we will not let you cancel.”

“Fudge.”

“You just have cold feet,” Brian said, his arm around my shoulders. “Let’s all go to bed. In the morning, I’ll make waffles and coffee, and you can spend the day doing something fun that doesn’t involve avoiding your family.”

Snorting, I nodded.

“He’s right,” Casey said. “I’m turning my phone off because I have a feeling Jake is going to try to call me.”

“Aw! Poor Jakey. Take his call,” I cried. I liked Casey’s boyfriend. “Stop being a bitch to Jake.”

“Jake’s an asshole,” Casey sneered.

“Jake’s a guy,” Brian said. “Guys screw up. He’s begged you for forgiveness for a week.”

“No can do. Jake undermined my well-being and then had the nerve to mess around with someone who I thought was a friend.”

“Hillary was never a friend,” I said, grimacing. “I told you that before, but you didn’t believe me.”

“Well, I’m suffering the consequences of that now, aren’t I? Anyway, this isn’t about Jake and Hillary. This is about my best friend who finally has something good going for her that doesn’t involve underpants or eBay.”
