“You’re right. I owe it to my practice, I guess.”
“Did you talk to Ramsen yet?”
“No. I planned on doing all that today, talking to him and asking my father for his support.”
“Okay, well, get busy. I’m going back to my place to talk to my roomies before I call Krista back.”
“When are you going to go?” Flynn asked.
He appeared to be disappointed with my decision, maybe because I hadn’t taken his feelings into full account. I wanted to do this on my own now. If Krista hadn’t called, and he hadn’t resisted, I’m sure things would have been status quo. I’d never consider doing it alone. Krista had seen something in me that made her think I could do it.
“As soon as I can get it organized. Are you going to call Krista?” I asked.
“No. I should, but I won’t out of respect for you.”
“It just occurred to me that this might be her trying to cause trouble for you and me.”
“Would that make a difference?” he asked.
“I don’t think so. Now that the offer is on the table, I really want to go. I didn’t want to come home, truthfully. But I don’t want it to cause trouble between us. I love you. I know you’ll be there soon, or I wouldn’t even consider going.”
“Why?”
“Because I want to be with you for the rest of my life, like we said. Get married, buy a house in Lebanon. The only thing different is that I’m going early, so I don’t have to hang around here and think of my sister. I’ve already determined it’s okay to run away. It’s starting fresh. Doing something just for me.”
“Wow, you are really well adjusted. I’m sorry I’m giving you a rough time.”
I pulled him to me and kissed his face again. “We’d better use this time well.” I reached down to caress him and immediately got a response.
“I don’t even want to think about being without you, Bella.”
“Me either. But look at it this way. I can get everything ready for you. I’ll look for a place for us to live, too. You just need to show up.”
“I’ll do more than that. Do you accept my apology?”
“Apology accepted. Okay, I’m heading home. You know the first thing I’m going to do? I’m packing up all that underwear and sending it to Krista for the clinic.”
Holding his belly, Flynn barked out a laugh. “That’s so generous of you.”
“Yeah, it won’t feel like a waste of money if I give it away.”
“Save some of it for yourself. I like the red thong.”
“I have about a hundred red thongs.”
I arrived home and told my roommates the news. As soon as my travel plans were made, they’d be free to rent out my room.
“I’m crushed,” Dale cried. “You’re my best friend.”
We got in a group hug.
“You are all welcome to visit. It’s not the best place to vacay, but if you want to make a difference, I’m sure Krista will welcome you with open arms.”
“I’m definitely going to come,” Brian said. “I’m ready for a change of scene.”
“Me, too,” Casey said. “We’ve been through school together and working and living together. Going to Lebanon to work sounds like a perfect way to round out our friendship.”
“What are you going to do with all the underpants?” Brian asked, making us laugh.
