Chapter65

Everleigh

While Della curled my hair, she told me Pack Ashe had hired a ballroom in one of the most expensive hotels in the city.

I’d heard her, of course.

I just hadn’t fully processed what that would mean.

So I climb out of the cab, my heart sinking as I take in the crush of people gathered at the foot of the steps leading up to the hotel.

There must be a hundred people between me and that entrance.

That’s not the least of my problems. It’s the woman clutching a clipboard and the two burly security guards standing behind her, blocking the doors.

It doesn’t look like they’re letting anyone in who isn’t on the list.

Why didn’t you let the hulking alpha bring you here, Everleigh? I bet he could have walked you right inside.

Fortunately, the set of double doors on the right doesn’t have anyone stopping me from walking in. Through the glass doors, I spot the hotel’s front desk.

I don’t have an invitation to this party. No one knows Pack Ashe would let me in if they knew I was here.

I glance down at my big poofy dress and spend a couple of seconds flattening my curls. Thanks to Mom’s intervention, they are not at the extreme level I’d been expecting. I’m actually kind of grateful for the dress. And the curls.

All I have to say is I’m returning from a party if the security asks me where I’m going. It’s not like I don’t look the part.

Determined to get in by any means necessary, I start threading my way to the front, apologizing as I go. Some people outright refuse to move until I tell them I’m a guest here and need to get to my room.

I’m two rows from the front when everyone surges forward and a high-pitched scream nearly deafens me.

I look at where everyone is pointing. A black limo has pulled up, and stepping out of it is…

“Rune,” I whisper.

I yell his name.

Unfortunately, so does everyone else, completely drowning out my yell.

And then Cian and Kylian climb out. The crowd reacts as if they’re celebrities, screaming and surging forward, contained by the metal fence holding them back. I guess, after their announcement a couple of days ago, theyarecelebrities now.

They certainly look the part.

Rune is in a suit and is scowling as he strides up the white stone steps. Cian is in his customary white shirt, rolled down to his forearms to reveal his fake Rolex. Kylian must have meant what he said about hating suits because he’s not wearing one.

I’m sure a hotel this elegant has a dress code, and ripped black jeans and a gray T-shirt would not be on it. But no one stops him from entering. The woman at the entrance clutching a clipboard flashes him a flirtatious smile that makes me nervous and doesn’t seem to notice all the rips in his jeans.

None of them so much as look this way. Or at the woman with the clipboard. As they head up the staircase, I try shouting again. Kylian’s name this time.

He must hear me because he pauses at the top of the short staircase. As he peers over his shoulder, someone grabs my arm and drags me back.

Something tears, and I stumble, nearly falling.

By the time I’ve corrected myself, Cian, Kylian, and Rune are stepping inside the hotel and the glass door is gently shutting behind them.

A dark-haired woman is glaring at me. Probably the same woman who nearly dragged me to the ground. She looks vaguely familiar, but I can’t remember where I’ve seen her before. And then I realize who she is. Lucie… Lucie Hartford. She was a regular at Lawrence’s parties. An alpha, but I think she had an omega sister who attended Haven Academy.

She gives my dress a dirty look. “Everleigh Wentworth. I thought it was you.”
