She said she came here because of me, yet she never once made any attempt to talk to me about the past. I did avoid her as much as I could when she first got here, but we ended up working for hours together. For entire days. She could have told me anything she wanted then, and I would have listened. But she didn’t. I can’t shake the feeling that she was waiting formeto say something. But what?

‘I came here for you.’

To do what with me? Hurt me some more? Then leave again?

Spencer sighs on the phone.

‘Did someone upset her?’

‘Yeah, you.’

“I didn’t do anything, Spence, I swear.” Apart from one thing, the kiss, but he can’t possibly know that. Can he?

“I know you didn’t, Isaiah. That’s why she left.”

What now?

Ok, this is stupid. I’m getting angry.

“What did she expect me to do?” I bite out.

Another deep sigh. What’s going on with him today? I don’t think I’ve ever heard Spencer sigh—and I’ve seen him cry.

“Well,” he says, “not ignore her, that’s for sure.”

“I’m not sure…” I’m not sure that’s your business, I wanted to say, really getting pissed off right now, but he stops me. Something has changed in his tone.

He’s frowning even harder and beginning to look just a little bit savage.

“Look,” he says, and his voice sounds brutal. “About what happened with Eden Elliot and you, regarding the past and everyone tiptoeing around the subject, I…I think this has gone on long enough. Is it possible that you don’t know the truth about her, about what she is?”

“What do you mean?Whathas gone on long enough?” All the anger leaves me like melting ice off my skin. This is serious. Cold fear grips my heart. “What are you talking about, man? Cut it out, you’re freaking me out.”

“Join the club. The whole damn country is freaking out about her.”

“What?” It comes out like a screech.

“Oh, dammit.” A banging sound clashes in my ear, as if he struck something with his hand. With vehemence. What is happening? My heart starts beating fast. “You really do not know, do you? Wait, stop here please.” This to his driver. Everything quiets down on his side of the call, and he stops talking as the car stops moving. He looks at me. And looks. His eyes go red. “I didn’t think…” He has to stop to clear his throat. “I didn’t think it possible that you wouldn’t know. Everyone knows.”

“Everyone knows what?”

“I’m so sorry,” Spencer says.

I am going to reach into the phone and murder him.

“What don’t I know?” I can barely get the words out.

“What she is,” Spence says in this strangled voice. “You don’t know what she is.”

“What is she?” I’m panicking now. I’m covered in cold sweat and there’s an iron fist around my stomach. What is going on? Is this a nightmare? An alternate universe?“Is there something wrong with her?”

Spencer hesitates, and my fear rises. I have been saying, and thinking, that I’m broken all these years, but this… This is what it feels to completely break.

I try to get to my feet, but I only go as far as my knees before I sit back down on my ass. Is it possible that all this time I’ve been whining about how much Eden hurt me, and all the while I was the one doing the hurting? Is she sick? Is she…?

“Nothing’s wrong with her,” Spencer’s voice on the phone’s screen anchors me. “It’s just… the entire country knows her story. Don’t you watch the news?”

“I don’t,” I murmur.
