She keeps her hand around my waist as we walk, and I consider faking it a bit, so that she can keep touching me, but then I get that light-headed feeling again and my vision starts going black, so I hurry on. No need to make more of an ass in front of her than I already have. I don’t remember the way to my cabin, but somehow I find myself on my bed, Eden helping me into it. I can’t see anything—I’m almost fainting by the time she lets go.

“Hey, you ok?” she asks me, sounding seriously scared.

I must look a mess.

And no, I’m not ok

“Just go,” I whisper. “For a second.”

I need to be clear, so that she doesn’t leave again for good, I think inside my confused brain.

“Seriously, you have gone all white. You nearly fainted on the stairs, I had to hold you up,” she says.

“I need sleep,” I say.

“Ok.”

She leaves, closing the door softly behind her.

Maybe if you were honest with me and told me what the hell happened four years ago, we would stop fainting around each other, is my last thought before sleep claims me.

We would stop dying around each other.

Then again, what do I know?

Maybe the truth is something I’m not ready to know.

Maybe the truth is something even worse than this.

Although I can’t imagine anything being worse than this.

Eden’s phone

Jude: Hey Eden, this is Jude. I got your number from Skye, is it ok?

Eden: Sure.

Jude: Are you working right now?

Eden: No, Isaiah is asleep.

Jude: Want to hang out?

Eden: Ok.

Jude: That’s the enthusiastic answer I was looking for.

Eden: Sorry, I want to hang out, really.

Jude: Just messing with you, Elliot. Do you want to come hang with Miki and me in the music room? We’re jamming to this new tempo and we need your opinion.

Eden: I know nothing about music, you know.

Jude: We also have food.

Eden: You should have led with that. I’ll be there in a second.
