“Yeah, Mom.”I rolled to sit on the edge of my bed, running my fingers through my hair.“I’m up.”

“Good.Suzi has been having contractions since five this morning, and they’re bad enough she’s heading to the hospital.”

A grin split my face.“It’s about time!”

My baby sister’s third child was almost a week late.I couldn’t even begin to imagine how miserable she was.

“I’m keeping Finn and Jackson until they come home.”

I snorted a laugh.“Good luck with those two hellions.”

“Dad will help.”

I snorted again.Mom was dreaming. When those two tykes showed up, Dad tended to hide out.Finn was two, and Jackson just shy of a year, but they were up and moving, both having started walking at nine months.

“With how easy of deliveries she had with the other boys,” Mom said, “I’m sure she’ll be fine and ready to tackle the world in a couple of days.”

I hoped so for everyone’s sake.

After making a promise to get my ass north as soon as I could, I hung up and shuffled into my bathroom to empty my bladder and wash the tired off my face.A few more hours of rest would have been nice.

Once dressed in a pair of nylon shorts, I sat on my couch, sipping a cup of black coffee and toying with the business card JJ had slid into my back pocket the night before.

A blatant invitation if ever I’d seen or heard one.

I wondered over the blond he’d been with—who he was, what they were to each other.I’d assumed a hookup since JJ wouldn’t have given me his card otherwise. But how they’d kissed…

Regardless, he was interested, plain and simple.Same as me.

But I feared the draw of more than mere lust toward him, didn’t trust my ability to keep my walls up well enough to protect my heart from a man who affected me as much as JJ did.

He was…too potent.Desirable in every physical way.My perfect type, and the magnetic pull between us was a force to be reckoned with.

And as a detective, he also probably had his shit together, unlike my ex.

“Fuck.”I heaved a heavy exhale, shoving aside thoughts of Xavier.

Mom always told me there was no point in living in the past.I had to keep my eyes on the future and the bright possibilities of what might be for a “sweet soul” like me.

Why she still considered those words for me after learning I was a damned escort, I had no clue. That woman wore rainbow-colored glasses when it came to her kids.

“What should I do?”I muttered to myself, expecting Mom would grab me by both cheeks and demand I go for it.Call JJ.Ask him out on a date.Give love a second chance and fall hard.

You won’t know if you don’t try.

Yet another thing Mom often said to me.

Perhaps it would be best to just be honest with JJ.Fill him in on the sob story of my life, tell him how damaged I was, only good for a fuck or two to rid us of the obvious sexual desire we felt for one another.

But could I even handle that much?

Lips in a thin line over the fact I didn’t trust myself, I set aside my empty mug, leaned forward, elbows on my knees, and dialed JJ’s cell number.

“Detective Jenner,” his deep voice greeted, sending a shiver down my spine and raising the hairs on my nape.

“JJ—it’s Kellen.”

“Mr.Roberts.”His voice betrayed his grin and a hint of satisfaction.“Found my card?”
