“Gailo, your guys in thefamigliaare up.” Robbie says, typing furiously.

“They’re ready.” He replies next to me, already typing away on his phone.

Van and Zander say something else, working away. I’m just watching Ellie’s feet pad up the stairs on her shirtcam. I switch to the security view and follow her trek to a guest room. Her aunt is still fussing and she nods and accepts it all, crackers, water, more tea, fresh towels, a robe, a change of clothes.

When she closes the bedroom door, shakes take over her whole body. Then I hear it. A whimper.

“Let me talk to her Robbie, now.”

I press the comm button. “Don’t say anything out loud, Ellie. They’ll be watching you on the cameras, and listening too.” She slumps against the door. “Go into the bathroom, into the actual toilet room and shut the door. No cameras there, but possibly still audio.”

I watch her follow my instructions. Again, as soon as she shuts the door there’s a whimper that pierces my eardrums, straight through to my soul. I have put this woman through so much.

“You did so well. Are you hearing me? Cough, sweetheart. You were a fucking master out there. Cough for me so I know you’re there.” She does. My chest clenches up at the sound.

My voice is scratchy as I ask her, “Are you alright? Sign with your hands in front of your body cam. How are you doing?”

We hear her huff at the question.

“Sorry,” I say. “Obviously you’re not doing great. But are you okay? Give me a sign, Ellie.”

She…

She flips me the bird.

Eleanna, queen of grace, just flipped off her husband and his entire team.

I see Robbie fight his smile. Gailo doesn’t bother fighting his.

I sag in my chair. I laugh a small laugh. Relieved out of my ever loving mind. My eyes even water. “That’s fair, wife. And I’m happy to take you up on the offer. But right now, try to sleep. Robbie will wake you in the earpiece in the middle of the night. Then that’s it, sweetheart. That’s it.”

She coughs in confirmation.

Now for the truly terrifying part.

CHAPTER 41

Eleanna

“Sweetheart, it’s time.” I hear Mark’s low voice in the earpiece. I guess I did manage to fall asleep. Which is a miracle. Although, I suppose panic and the threat of ruining people’s lives with one wrong facial expression is enough to wear a person out.

“Alright, Ellie,” Robbie starts. I guess they can see I’m sitting up now. I really hate this. All of it. I’m almost there though. I’m almost done.I am getting myself out of this. No matter what.

“You’re going to need to put that shirt back on for us.” Robbie goes on. I put on the button up over the tank top and pajama bottoms I have on. “We’re already looping the security footage and have disabled all sensors and alarms. Everyone is dead asleep. The patrols outside are gone for at least twenty minutes, and they can’t see inside anyway. So, you’re good to go.”

“They can’t see you or hear you now on camera, but still try not to make any noise. But you can nod when you’re ready.” Mark’s voice is clearly trying to encourage me, comfort me. It doesn’t. This is insane. This is a suicide mission. Except it’s not just death for me but for Mark and everyone he works with. Still, I have no choice. It’s this and then nothing more.

I nod.

“Alright, go ahead and head out into the hall. Go down the back stairs to the kitchen like we talked about.” I tiptoe where Robbie says. My feet are soundless on the thick carpets, but my pulse is exploding in my ears. “Take your time, Ellie, you don’t want to trip.”

Right. I’m almost running. I take a deep breath.

“Okay now, down that hall to your uncle’s office…good, good.” Robbie coaches but I freeze. I’m about to go snooping through my uncle’s private office. I’m shaking, yet again. “Ellie, he is snoring like an ox. No guards and no alarms. Go on in.”

I do. It’s dark, but my eyes adjusted on my trip down to the first floor. It’s just like Papá’s office but bigger and more ornate. He has a heavy wood desk, book shelves, chairs, statues, candelabra, a couch and a fireplace. I head toward the desk.

“Wait. Before you sit, you need to grab that angel figure.”
