Luna nods on my phone screen. “True. But arranged marriages are a bitch, and you hadn’t said a word. I knew it was sus.”

“Huh?”

“Suspicious. Suspect. Fishy as hell.”

“Oh.” I refocus. “Anyway. I thought we were making progress, but is it progress if it’s…the same?” She cocks her head to the side because I’ve answered my own question. “Right. Literally cannot be progress then. It’s just cold. Well, I mean it’s hot, and I explode every time, but it’s been weeks of him coming in and ravaging me from behind and then going back to his own room.”

Luna makes a face. “Doggy-style every single time?”

“Well, I guess that’s not true. Once against a wall, once on the kitchen counter.”

“Hot!”

I sigh. “Except he doesn’t look at me, doesn’t let me touch him, he hardly touches me. Last night, I said ‘Mark, I want to see you’ and of course he made me beg, which of course I did. Then he did turn me around and he was still fully clothed, but we were at least laying down together, in my bed, and he looked at me, really made eye contact for the first time.”

“Well, that’s definitely progress then.”

“But when it was over he just got up and left, angrier than ever. Like I’d pushed him too far.”

“Yikes, I’m sorry. Buuuut…” she trails off.

“But what?”

“But you wanted a partnership, isn’t that what he’s giving you? He’s not cheating, he bought you a new kitchen and a new car, you said you have inside jokes, you text, and he’s had dinner with you a few times, right?”

“We ate at the table while he worked on his phone. I guess that counts?”

“See, that’s what I’m saying. It should count. He’s doing all you asked for. Isn’t this what you wanted?”

I slump down onto my bed. “Shit. I guess it is.”

“I’m sorry, did the Princess of Texas herself just say a curse word!” Luna pretends to gasp and then choke. I just stare and wait for her to finish. “Sorry. Okay. So, I think you have to remember that these men are not normal. Our life is not normal. There may never be love or romance or sweet, slow naked, baby-making sex. You may never get pillow talks. This might be all he’s got to offer. And you asked him to give it to you and only you, and that’s what he’s doing.”

“You’re right. I think this is it, his best. I think he’s doing his best.”

“And, tonight he’s celebrating a big win. The wall is done, whatever plan he has with your uncle must be working. The Delgado pipelines are up and running again, faster than ever.”

I squint at my screen. “Do I want to know what that means, exactly?”

Her eyes go wide. “Absolutely not. Most of it is boring numbers in spreadsheets anyway. The point is, it’s his big night, what do you have planned?”

“It’s just a little reception at one of Tío’s fancy restaurants, I made sure the restaurant is serving his favorites. I’m wearing a short, tight, blue, sparkly dress that shows off my legs and butt which I think he’ll like. I like it. Plus, I think it’ll look good with his eyes.”

“Wow. You’ve got it bad.”

I sigh. “I do, I really do.”

“Well, he is one lucky asshole. Try to have fun tonight and remember, this IS your dream, sorella.Give him time.”

“Alright. You’re right.”

After chatting a bit more about her plans for world domination which, in my opinion, rely heavily on help from the Vix character we know nothing about, we say our goodbyes. I hurry to get ready, opting for a big glamorous ponytail for my hair. My red-brown locks seem to be one of Mark’s favorite things to touch, and the ponytail matches the fun feel of the dress. It’s a party, after all.

I meet Mark in the entryway, finding him angry. He’s doing his best. He’s doing his best.

I smile at him and he softens slightly.

“Blue?” He asks as his eyes go from the dress, down my exposed legs to my blue heels.
