“No.” He reaches out and wipes one away before I back up further. “I could have chosen Mia or one of your aunts. There were capo’s daughters and widows. I asked for you because I am a selfish, greedy bastard. I saw your photo and wanted you. Then I read your file and watched you in action, security videos, Mia’s secret Instagram, you were like a fucking swan among grizzly bears. You had to be mine. Your grace, your elegance, I couldn’t look away. There was no question.”

“There are a lot of fucking questions, Mark!”

The smirk is back. “You’re going to need to stop cursing at me if I’m not able to punish you for it.”

“Pun…you’re thinking about sex?”

He shrugs, “Well, you’re in the room, so.”

I sit back down. “I really am going to be sick.”

“You won’t. Want to know why?” I look up, waiting. He smiles but the expression is sad and a little angry. “Because youcanhandle it. Because all your life you prepared for a mafioso and guess what, sweetheart?Tienes uno.”You got one.

CHAPTER 35

Eleanna

His tone sets me off. This isnotwhat I wanted. This is basically my worst nightmare. To be caught with the enemy, a spy. Trapped against my family. Against everything I’ve ever known.

“Mark, I have to warn them! I can’t just stand by and let you destroy everyone I love!”

He starts, “You said you would choose me.”

“That was before! When I thought I knew—“

“You do know me, Ellie, please, listen.” He kneels down in front of me again, reaching out.

“Do not. Touch me.” He freezes. As he drops his hands, he sets his jaw and flattens his lips into a hard, pissed off line. I can’t help but raise my voice. “First, you lie about everything—every single thing!—and then you tell me the truth! Why? Why not just leave me in the dark and then divorce me like you planned? Now I’m an enemy to my own family!”

“Because I want you. With me.” He points to his chest. “On my side. I told you I’m a greedy, selfish son of a bitch and I wanted you brought in. Into the truth.” He looks away. Which makes me think that, yet again, there’s more he’s not saying.

“No. Direct, Mark. Be direct with me for real, you need something. You need me to do something. Or else, you would’ve left me like you planned.”

“We don’t need you. There is something you can do, but I can do it without you. It’ll just be more difficult and dangerous. It’ll be a lot harder and make everything take longer. But I can do it without you. I just don’t want to.” He slumps back. “I don’t want to go on without you.”

I let out a loud, awkward laugh. “Forgive me if I don’t believe you for a second. You just have some task that only someone close to him can pull off. Lucky fucking me.”

“There’s that mouth again.” He almost growls at me.

“You’re disgusting.”

“And you’re a fucking vision. I didn’t even get to tell you how much I like your hair.”

Another laugh. “My hair? You’re talking about MY HAIR? Tell me what the hell is going on!”

He launches up into my space, hovering over me in the chair. I throw myself back into the tall back cushion. But there’s really no escape.

“Are you goading me, wife?” He puts his hands on the armrests.

“No.”

He grips one hand on my hip and moves the other up my arm slowly. “Sure feels like it. Like you want me to snap. And I’m about to. I’ll have you bent over this chair in half a second.” His hand goes up my shoulder to my neck. But then he grips my neck. No.

No no no.

My whole body reacts to hands there, to the memory. After all this time, I thought it was over. I thought I’d blocked it all.

“Don’t, don’t!” I scream, grabbing at my neck.
