Dargus growled, his tail swishing out of control, and Cubbie squawked threateningly by his foot.

“Master, have I displeased you?”

Lia’s gentle words cut through the rage that had taken over his mind, and Dargus realized what he had been about to do. He managed to pull himself together and halt Cubbie with the leash right before they reached the horned frucker. Clawing the Azturian’s hand off would have been satisfying but fatal to the mission and all whose lives depended on it. Dargus’, Lia’s, and Cubbie’s included.

“Come here,” he snarled at Lia. “Time to get your chain back, before you forget who you belong to.”

“Yes, Master.”

“Relax, Darginus,” Luchinfer said through a chuckle as he finally released Lia’s hand. “We are all good colleagues here. We don’t steal from each other. I’m not even interested in buying your property, as I currently own many talented dancers to choose from for entertainment and delicacies.”

“Good to know,” Dargus muttered while he was fiddling with the delicate chain. Attaching it to Lia’s collar was hard when she trembled at the Azturian’s last words, and Dargus’ own hands weren’t steady.

He had been right. Having his true mate rather than some random female as his partner changed everything. The law enforcer with nerves of steel and mind focused on the mission alone was nowhere to be found.

Great time to realize it, you moron–

“Don’t mind if I steal a feather, though.”

Sivi’s nimble fingers darted from behind Dargus and forcefully tugged at two of the feathers over Lia’s cleavage.

The large feathers came off, along with the section of delicate fabric underneath them.

Leaving part of Lia’s mating marks exposed for all to see.

CHAPTER 31

ORANGE FUZZ TO THE RESCUE

Lia gasped as her dress tore, revealing the tops of her breasts to everyone around her. The mating marks that matched perfectly the ones on Dar’s naked chest, included.

The marks that had saved them days ago but meant ‘game over’ for them now.

We’re screwed.

“Oh, would you look at that!” Sivi exclaimed in fake surprise, green finger pointing at Emilia’s tiger stripes.

Then everything began moving in slow motion: Emilia turned to look at Dar to see how he’d react to the situation and to follow his lead; she saw determination fill his ocher eyes; she heard Cubbie chitter questioningly; she sensed movement to her left where she had last seen the purple devil…

That was when things around her sped up, as if someone had pressed the fast-forward button. Dar let go of the chain he had yet to attach to her collar, elbowed Sivi to clear his path, picked Emilia up, threw her over his shoulder, and jumped on the dance platform. All of that happened in the blink of an eye.

Emilia’s hanging head spun when the platform went up in the air, rising gradually after a tap by Dar’s tail.

“On my back, now!” Dar shouted to be heard over the cacophony of voices below them. “Cubbie! Roll home!”

Oh, no, Cubbie is alone down there!

“Lia!”

How she got on Dar’s back while the platform was still moving, Emilia had no clue. She just knew that the platform had not stopped yet when he crouched, told her to hold on tight, and went airborne.

They flew over the crowd, shouts echoing all around and swallowing up the sound of her scream.

She was imagining herself as an Emi-Dar pancake on the fancy tiles below when a cage loomed in front of them. Dar crashed into the golden bars, the force of the collision sending the whole thing swaying wildly, but his hands and tail had already gripped the metal.

“Oh, my God–”

“Hold on!”
