But somehow half an hour later, Emilia was in the car on her way to William’s Pub. She just had to get her reference letter, and then she was off to where she was supposed to go two months ago. With good traffic, she should be in Brinsmingam an hour or two after dark.

Or not.

By the time she exited the pub through the back door, it was already getting dark. She couldn’t have said no to her colleagues’ secret goodbye party, after all. If the pub hadn’t gotten busy a few minutes ago, she probably would have stayed even longer.

Making herself leave town was one of the hardest things she had done. Not as hard as infiltrating an intergalactic slavers’ lair and getting out in one piece, but close enough.

She was halfway to her car when something shimmered under the street light of the employees’ parking lot.

Thenheappeared out of nowhere. Right between Emilia and her car.

“Hey, pumpkin.”

CHAPTER 36

TO RIDE OR NOT TO RIDE

“No.”

“No?”

The perplexed way he said that only added fuel to the storm rising within Emilia as she stared at the human disguise of the alien she had dreamed of seeing again. And wanted to throttle right now.

“You can’t just ditch me while I’m asleep, show up 59 days later, and ‘hey, pumpkin’ me! What the heck, Dar?”

Something twitched in his pants, and she had no doubt he would be hiding behind his tail right now if it weren’t tucked in there.

“Umm... Actually…” he rubbed the back of his neck, “I stunned you while you were asleep, andthenIun-abducted you.”

Her hands balled into fists by her side, but Emilia forced herself to take a deep breath and not raise her voice. The last thing she needed was one of her colleagues coming out to check what was going on.

“You planned thisun-abduction. While we were together after the mission. While I was thinking about our future together, you were planning to just leave me here and never return.”

“Actually–”

“The last time we were together, when I thought we were celebrating surviving that heck of a mission, you were actually giving me a pity fuck. Or was it a final treat for you with a Terran before you moved on with the next mission?”

Dar flinched as if hit. “Is that what you think? That I used you for my mission and left you when I no longer needed you?”

She crossed her arms over her chest and arched an eyebrow. She was so pissed but also felt this burning need to go to him, to apologize for her harsh words, to–

Stop it, Emi! You’re not the one in the wrong here. You’ve got to stay strong.

“Lia…” He moved towards her, but she stepped back, making him pause. “Pumpkin. You can’t truly think me capable of such deceit. I’m your true mate!”

“You’re an expert in undercover work, Dar. And I’m the gullible female who believed in your sacred bond mambo-jambo.” She swiped at a stray tear.Don’t cry, don’t cry.“That’s what I think.”

“Well,” his face turned stern, “you’re frucking wrong.”

Emilia scoffed, but inside she was already hanging on his every word.Pathetic.But she couldn’t just ignore his presence and drive off without hearing his version.

“I un-abducted you because I thought I was doing the right thing.”

She blinked.

“I nearly got you killed, and more than once, Lia!” Now Dar was the one trying to keep his voice down but failing. “Staying with me was too dangerous for you. I had to get you to safety, even if that meant living without you.”

She rolled her eyes but said nothing. Despite the clichéd lines, he sounded so sincere it was getting harder and harder not to go to him.
