I didn’t get nearly enough sleep for this emotional roller coaster.

I was so busy watching Evie’s ass as she walked out, I nearly missed Sawyer walking in.

But when I noticed him, it was impossible to ignore the way he turned and stared at the same view. “Give me ten minutes, Evie,” he said.

Seriously? He came in my restaurant to—

“I can’t, Sawyer. I have things to do.” She kept walking.

I had absolutely nothing to be jealous of. I’d told Evie how I felt, and it went so well.

Was I envious that she had his attention?

No.

Sawyer turned to me with a smirk. “She left in a hurry. Want me to talk to her on your behalf?”

He didn’t think I knew about last night. “Not necessary, Richie Rich.” I turned away from him to the dining room. There was opening prep to be done.

“Are we back to the name calling?” Sawyer joined me. “Does that mean she told you she couldn’t get enough?”

Uh-huh. “She told me you weren’t worth the lube. What do you want?” I pulled a chair from a table and set it on the ground.

“To talk about Evie.” Sawyer mimicked my actions, grabbing another chair.

If he was going to work, who was I to argue? “What do you really want?”

For each chair I pulled down, he did the same. “I just told you. I came in here because Evie was here, but I’ll settle for talking to you.” The smugness vanished from his voice.

I couldn’t figure out his game. “Talk to me about what?”

“I may know how to get Evie back on her feet.”

No. There was definitely a trick in this. I had yet to see otherwise from Sawyer. There was always a move or a game or a plot. “Does that mean you’re going to stop trying to buy her out?” I asked.

“No.”

And there it was. “Okay then. Out you go. Or I can throw you out.”

“You’re such a fucking caveman. You don’t think Evie actually likes that, do you?”

I was pretty sure. “She fucks me, rather than just sleeping, so yeah.”

“Hmm.” Sawyer glanced at his watch. “Okay. I’ll stop wasting your time.”

God damn it. I was torn between giving Sawyer any time, and hearing any solution that could help Evie, regardless of who it came from. “What are you up to, and why?”

Sawyer shook his head. “I’d rather tell you both at the same time.”

I was going to deck this man. “You already know she’s not here, and you dragged this out anyway? She’s working the rest of today.” After she talked to the police. “So why are you still here?”

“I don’t know.” Sawyer frowned. “I guess… I don’t have anywhere else to be.” He sounded reluctant to admit it. “My plan was basically tell Evie the news and take up space on her calendar.”

“You don’t strike me as the kind of man who doesn’t have a back-up plan.”
