“You are waiting,” I remind him.

“You know what I mean. I wouldn’t have kissed you to begin with. But I’m not a good man, Eva. I’m the same kind of man that he was,” he admits. I nod my head unsure of how to feel about all of that.

“I just need some time.”

“You can have all my time. I’ll wait.” Nodding once more, he leans over and presses a quick kiss to the side of my head before standing and leaving the room. I flop back onto the bed, blowing out a huge breath. I don’t know what the hell I’m doing anymore.

This is it. The time has come. I will repay him with his own death. I will watch him bleed out on the floor of his own home.

I pull my hair back and tie it out of my face before looking around the room. The men are all ready. They’re stuffing guns into holsters and stocking ammo.

“You sure about this?” Roni asks as I take the gun from his hand and slip it into the back of my jeans.

“I’ve never been so sure about anything in my life.” He nods his head and passes me the other gun that I shove into the front of my jeans before pulling my shirt over it.

“You keep your eyes open. We can hear everything with the earpiece in so don’t take that out. Vin will be in there with you but we aren’t far behind okay?” I nod my head as he does the same.

“Come here,” he says pulling me into a hug that I wasn’t ready for. My hands shake slightly and he can feel it. “Just breathe. In and out.” Nodding my head I do what he said and breathe. When he releases me, I step back and look to Vin. He looks poised and ready, like he’s done this all his life. And he has. This is his life. Our eyes meet and a small smile tugs across his face before he walks over and grabs my face in his hands.

“You don’t veer from the plan, Eva. You stay where I told you,” he says.

“I will. I know.”

“You feel like you need an out you just look at me. I’ll get you out of there.”

“I can do this.”

“I know you can. I just need you to know that you can get out whenever you might need to.”

“Okay. I get it.” Then he leans in and kisses me. His lips are soft, taking their time as they sweep over mine. He pulls away and nods his head once. I blink rapidly trying to keep the tears that threaten to fall at bay. Straightening my spine, I turn and head out of the back door with the guys following behind me. Most of them jump into vans while me, Vin and Roni climb into the lead SUV.

The driver pulls out of the driveway and onto the main road as my heart beats out of my chest. I was uneasy when we came back to Chicago this morning. I was uneasy working out of one of Dameco’s old houses. Everything about today has made me uneasy. I don’t like the feeling I have in the pit of my stomach. I don’t like the way my hands shake or that I can see Dom’s face in my head. I close my eyes and take a few deep breaths trying to control all the feelings and emotions that run wild through me. Vin’s hand on my knee helps ground me slightly.

“Deep breaths,” he says. I do as I’m told sucking oxygen into my lungs. A few more and I feel myself steady slightly. Rolling my shoulders back, the car slowly comes to a stop and I know it’s time.

“You know what to do.” I nod my head and climb out of the car walking down the block with Vin right behind me. When I reach the house, my stomach knots. This is it. There is no turning back now. I raise my hand and knock on the door. I glance over, but I can’t see Vin, he’s hidden out of sight. Then the door handle turns and so does my stomach. When the door opens I come face to face with the worst Dameco there is. Dom’s father.

“What do you want?” this wasn’t the plan. He wasn’t supposed to open the door! Someone else was supposed to open the door!

“I…I umm.” Come on, Eva. Get it together.

“You knew my son,” he says putting it together. My heart slams against my ribs. This is bad.

“I have information!”

“What information?” I reach for my gun, pulling it quickly. I press it to his chest and stare into his eyes.

“Get the fuck in the house,” I growl. Just as I think he’s going to refuse, Vin runs up with his gun drawn.

“Do what she says,” he tells him.

“Vincent? What the hell is going on?”

“Get in the house, Dameco. Now!” He roars. The man steps back inside and we both follow.

“Marco Dameco,” I say letting his name roll off my tongue with disgust.
